Default FM 2008 - The rise of Aston Villa

Background Information

The manager in this game is Brian Houlihan he became the manager of Aston Villa after former manager Martin O Neill left the club, although there was speculation as to why he left both he and the club insisted it was for personal reasons although the tabloids had their own spin on it. Brian had been at the club for a brief spell as a member of the backroom staff and once Martin O Neill had left he applied and had surprisingly been given the job, apparently the chairman Randy Lerner had taken a shine to him. Although the Villa fans didn’t quite agree with Lerner’s decision they knew that a string of bad results or failure to fulfil expectations would see Brian given his marching orders. Brian had never played professionally himself, he played with a string of semi-pro teams throughout the UK and Ireland before an injury ended any chance of going professional but after his career had ended he earned his coaching badges and eventually found his way onto the Aston Villa backroom staff as a coach, with no previous experience it was a shock to see him be given the managers job, but sometimes risks paid off. Only time would tell if this was a wise move by the chairman or if the villa fans who were unimpressed at his appointment would get their wish to see a bigger name in the managers role

Press release to the fans from Brian Houlihan:

First off let me thank the chairman for giving me this opportunity to prove that I have what it takes to turn this Villa team into a team that is capable of winning gold. I know a lot of the fans are unhappy I was given the job considering my experience but all I ask is for some patience as I try to turn Aston Villa’s fortunes around because I believe this club has been underachieving for too long. I honestly believe that this club has a bright future ahead of them and that’s why I would be adamant that this club can get into Europe this season and that over the course of the next couple of seasons we can win the league title. It’s not going to be easy but I know with the fans and players we have it’s very achievable. If I feel at any stage the club would be better off without me I will not hesitate in stepping down and letting someone else have a go but trust me when I say things are going to be good for Aston Villa for years to come

As a former coach Brian knows this squad quite well, in his opinion the club needed a few signings.

Brian feels happy with the goalkeepers at his disposal but he might consider looking into the option of bringing in a stronger one down the line

As for the defenders both the left and right back positions would need some bolstering, with Bouma the obvious first choice for left back not being good enough in Brian’s opinion and with Mellberg who is more of a central defender the most likely choice for right back then defiantly a proper right back would be needed. In Brian’s opinion he has good strong centre-backs but if a good signing was available he might bolster that part of the squad

Although having strong midfielders like Barry (left midfield), Reo-Coker (centre) and the likes of Mahoney and Young giving him options on the right side of midfield this is one part of the squad he wants to improve with the likes of (in Brian’s opinion) Gardner, Osbourne and Berger not good enough to hold down a first team position

Villa have a lot of options up front with youngsters like Moore and Agbonlahor who could be stars in the future. Carew has experience and of course, Young and Mahoney who maybe employed in the midfield can slot in easily up front. Harewood is another option but deep down Brian feels he needs one more strong and experienced striker to join the squad and score some goals

Man City vs Aston Villa (League Game #5)

Changes: Changes from the last league match are. Guilherme starts at left back while Davies is on the bench. Agbonlahor replaces Harewood up front. Sorensen, Petrov, Cahill, Davies and Moore are on the bench while Harewood, Laursen and Bouma (not match fit) are not picked. Maloney is still injured

Manchester City start the better of the two teams and in the 1st minute former Villa player Darius Vassell hits the upright. City are 1-0 in the 3rd minute after Michael Johnson receives a superb ball from Elano and he beats the keeper with a low drive. Manchester City are 2-0 up by the 9th minute after Knight brought down Bianchi in the box and rightly so the penalty was given. Bianchi stepped up and sent Carson the wrong way. Villa are now under pressure but some of that pressure is relieved when a Coloccini long ball is headed down by Carew to Barry who’s first time shot hits the back of the net in the 13th minute, 2-1. Man City have a two goal advantage once again when in the 18th minute a Michael Johnson pass causes the defence all sorts of trouble and Vassell is able to slot the ball home, 3-1. Elano almost makes it 4-1 in the 23rd minute but Carson manages to stop the powerful shot. In the 32nd minute following some good play by van der Vaart, Carew is one on one with the keeper but his shot is sent well over the bar.

3-1 to Manchester City at half-time

Cahill replaces Knight and Moore replaces Agbonlahor for the second half. The match is seemingly done and dusted when in the 47th minute Bianchi is the first to the rebound following Carson’s save from a Vassell shot and he scores easily, 4-1. Villa go in search of a goal or two to save face and van der Vaart in the 49th minute and Carew in the 51st minute both go close to scoring but are denied by good goalkeeping.
