“Breaking news here on Sky Sports” claimed the presenter
“Real Madrid’s new English manager has revealed his first signings at the club today. 17 year Columbian winger Sherman Cardenas and Jaun Pablo Francia, a 21 year attacking midfielder from French club Bordeaux.
“In a press conference held by the club this afternoon Smith said that he was pleased to have signed two exciting young players for Madrid although many of the fans do not seem to share this excitement at the signing of two virtually unknowns for the club.”

The young Columbian had joined up with the squad on their return to Madrid from Holland and Ashley had been impressed with him in recent training sessions. He seemed to be fitting in well and although only 17 Ashley had no qualms about putting him in the first team squad if he needed to.

Jaun Pablo Francia was an Argentinian who held dual nationality with Italy. He was an attacking midfielder who was comfortable playing on the left, right or center of midfield, and as Smith was looking for cover for these areas he was pleased to have captured the signature of the Italian under 21 player. He had watched him in an under 21 international against Croatia where he had come on as a 73 minute substitute, setting up the goal for the 1-0 win. At a price of 3.5 million he still had some transfer budget left to try and beef up the left and right sides of defence.

With the new season now only a week away Calderon had invited Smith to join him in Monte Carlo for Champions League Group draw. It was a glitzy event where all the top European Managers were present. They had sat down in their seats awaiting for the commencement of the draw and it wasn’t to long before the evenings proceedings were at an end.

Real had been drawn in Group B along with Ajax of Holland, Shakhtar Donetsk of Romania and Steaua Bucharest of The Ukraine. Madrid were favourites to win the group but Smith knew that trips to Romania and The Ukraine would be tough.

Other highlights of the draw say Milan and Chelsea pitted together in the same group and the European Champions Barcelona having to face tricky trips to Turkey to face Galatasaray and French side Lyon.

The two of them returned to Madrid the next day and Ashley started to prepare for the visit of Athletic Bilbao.

The day before his first match and the Athletic coach Felix Sarriugarte had released a comment to the press stating that due to Smith’s inexperience he didn’t think that he had the ability to win the Spanish title. He had also claimed that he as overly concerned about his teams chance’s against Madrid the following day. Ashley was asked to comment on this by the local press and stated that he was confident that on the form his team had shown in the pre-season matches they would be able to match whatever Bilbao could through at them. However, the headline in the next days papers read “My Team Are Superior”. Not being pleased by this at all he hoped to himself that his team would record a victory against Athletic.

It was a hot night at the Bernabeu and Ashley’s nerves started to kick into overtime mode. He addressed the team in the dressing room and announced his first 11.

GKR - CasillasDC - RamosDC - CannavaroDC - SalgadoWBL - CarlosWBR - CicinhoCM - BeckhamCM - DiarraCM - CassanoFC - V.NistelrooyFC - Raul

He had employed a 3-2-3-2 tactic with the wingbacks providing the width on each side.

Read Madrid 1 - 0 Athletic
[I]Robinho (86) Aitor Ocio sent off (88)[/B]

After a dominating first half by Madrid they had gone in drawing with the away team.

Raul had taken a slight knock so rather than risking it getting worse Smith brought on Robinho which paid off in the 86th minute after some nice passing between Beckham and Nistelrooy the ball had fallen to Robinho who hit it on the half volley sending it past the diving keeper and sending the fans in the Bernabue into rapturous cheers and applause.
The match was then overshadowed in the 88th minute when Althletics central dender Ocio blatently kicked Van Nistelrooy and was immediately red carded.

Ashley was happy with the result. His team had dominated though out the match and although it had taken until the 86th minute for them to score they had looked comfortable and had created many chances. It was now his job to get the team to put the chances away.

I like it a lot but one thing, it is Colombia and not columbia . This may sound really picky but it really annoys me since im partly colombian.

Great work though!

Thanks tamtheman. Glad your enjoying the story so far. Will make sure my minor spelling errors are corrected for the future..

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On return to the hotel where he was staying were messages from various well wishers congratulation him on the teams win that night. It had been a long day, and after reading all of his messages he put his head down to get a well earned rest.

The next day he arrived at the stadium where a stack of the days newspapers were. With the help of his assistant he read through them and the general consensus was that although he had won against Athletic there were still doubts over his appointment.

He took the tape of his next opponents Mallorca who had beaten Getafe the night before, with Diego Tristan scoring the only goal of the match in a one sided match. He knew he would have to find a way to stop the service to the Spaniard if they were to stop the threat of him scoring.

Real Madrid v Mallorca

Smith decided to employ a different formation for the visit of Mallorca to the Bernabue and picked both Guti and Reyes for their first starts of the season. He’d also decided to start with Robinho as Raul was still carrying a slight knock.

CasillasSalgado Cannarvaro Ramos Carlos Diarra GutiBeckham Reyes Nistelrooy Robinho

Real Madrid 2 - 0 Mallorca
Robinho (7,50)

With Robinho adding another two goals to his season tally and a man of the match performance from Reyes Ashley was pleased. He had also been happy by the display that new signing Francia had put on after coming on for Beckham in the 68th minute. With 2 wins so far this season he was happy with the way his managerial career had started especially as his side had yet to taste defeat since he had taken over.

In the run up to his first away match against Zaragoza no less than 11 players were called up for Internationals. He looked at the results, notably the 8-0 demolition of Andorra by England. Ashley was happy with the result as new manager Steve McClaren was undefeated in the 3 matches since taking charge.
His mood was soon changed by the physic’s report that Raul had strained his knee ligaments in the win of Northern Ireland and would be out for at least 2 months. With both Ronaldo and know Raul out he only had two out and out forwards available to him.

Ashley looked over the fixtures for September. The fixture that caught his attention was the match against Barcelona. He hoped that the form his team were on would continue and that they would be able to carry this into the derby match.

However he tasted his first defeat since joining Real in the 2-1 defeat away to Zaragoza. The home side had been the better team on the day and with new signing Francia being sent off 5 minutes after coming on as a second half substitute he was hardly pleased.

Zaragoza 2 - 1 Real Madrid
Zapater (11) V.Nistelrooy (20)
Lafita (83) Francia sent of (69)

The bad news continued when Smith was warned about his comments made against the referee in a post match interview. Madrid’s Nistelrooy had scored what he thought had been a legitimate goal that had been ruled out for offside and Smith’s comments about the ref were hardly “nice”.

Ashley hoped that the next match away to Bucharest would see the team get back to winning ways.

Real had been made favourites before the match and he didn’t want his side to get their Champions League campaign off to a bad start. The team didn’t disappoint, winning comfortably 2-0 with man of the match Guti getting on the score sheet. Real had finished the game with 10 after a 90th minute clash of heads between Reyes and one of the Bucharest defenders. He hoped that this was only minor and that Reyes would recover in time for the next match.

Steau 0 - 2 Real Madrid
Guti (1)
Avram own goal (75)
