"Well, Mr Scovron, you certainly seem to have made quite a reputation for yourself at training camp!" said the jolly voice of the Carlisle chairman, Andrew Jenkins, flicking through my CV.
My heart skipped a beat and I my hopes of getting my first job grew until they were taller than me. I felt my self-confidence gradullay ascending too.
"Unfortunately, we were looking for someone a bit more...experienced than a 20 year old man-"
"-I'm 21 actually, sir."
" Well, as I was saying, we feel the need for a more experienced man in charge of the club to take us forward. The board members agreed unanimously that the players would have greater respect for a man with proven success under his belt."
My self-confidence and high hopes plummetd faster than a one pence coin dropped from the top of the Eifel Tower. From now on Andrew Jenkins was Scovron enemy number one.
"I'm sorry we had to disapoint you," he said, but I barely heard him from trying to solve the anguish I was feeling inside. Without pausing to think, I whirled around in a flurry, knocking all sorts of important documents off the chairman's desk, and left, only stopping when I had reached my car - a Volkswagen Golf - to stop the flood of tears crashing to down my red face. When I became a famous manager, I would get my revenge on Andrew Jenkins... but right now I had to consider what he had said - maybe I was too young at the moment...
The months went by, my hopes got flattened more and more, and my list of rejected jobs piled up on my CV. I had been rejected by:
Sampdoria
Walsall
Sheffield Wednesday
Lazio
Empoli
Reading
Southampton
Luton
Gimnastic
Athletico Madrid
Fiorientina
Real Sociadad
At first I just thought that my applications had been lost in the pos due to strikes, but then my dismal feelings got even worse when I found out the clubs were just ignoring me because of my age.
I had a letter from the FA. They told me that even though I had been rejected so many times, to carry on and they wished me good luck. Enclosed was a handbook of tactics for new managers and £750. This livened my spirits a bit.
So, still considering my future, I set out creating my first training session.
