Rep Power: 0 | cheers, bob I've just finished playing the third season on the game, so this should be going for a good while yet
-------------------------------------------------------------------- January 2005
The opening of the international transfer window began with Nathan Ellington completing a move to Gretna on the day we faced Nottingham Forest at the JJB. Another decent sized crowd turned up, this time just shy of 20,000, and they witnessed a superb performance from the home side. Fabián Estoyanoff was at the top of his game and scored twice in the early stages of the first half. Forest had no answer for our quick play, and Thomson rounded off the win with a low volley in the second half.
The benefit of having one of the bigger squads in the league became clear when we played Rotherham at Millmoor just over forty-eight hours later. Although we went behind in the first half to a Michael Proctor goal, we were clearly the fitter side in the second half and Darren Bent grabbed himself a double to grab the points and move us up to fifth.
There was plenty of transfer activity in the days afterward, three bosman transfers were arranged for the summer and Joleon Lescott joined from Wolves as they decided to cash in on him with only six months left on his contract.
My first venture into the FA Cup came at Scunthorpe’s Glanford Park, and it was far from an easy tie. Lescott made his debut from the start but bowed out in the fiftieth minute with a groin strain that would keep him out for two weeks. At that point the scores were still level and Scunthorpe were the better side, but they began to tire as the match went on, and in the final ten minutes, Ligüera scored a superb solo to send us through.
A full week before our home game against Gillingham gave us the chance to rest up some players and complete deals for a couple more to leave for pastures new. The first half of the game was a horribly dull affair, but despite not playing well, we grabbed two goals in the second half – though Bent and Ligüera – and stole a win we didn’t particularly deserve.
With Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts having left the club, a new striker was amongst my priorities for the window, and Jack Tuyp of Groningen attracted my attention. A deal was quickly done with the Dutch club and the forward made his debut against Premiership side Bolton in the fourth round of the FA Cup. A tight first half was goalless at its end, but Tuyp marked his debut with a goal early in the second half, and when Bent replaced him, the former Ipswich man hit a double which made Jay Jay Okocha’s late effort insignificant.
Bottom of the table Cardiff were hosts for our next outing and, much to my chagrin, the curse of the former player struck once more. This time it was Lee McCulloch, sold to the Welsh side in late August. His first came from the penalty spot after Magnus Hedman was sent off for bringing him down and two more before half time made the game safe for the home side. They netted a fourth in the second half, this time Graham Kavanagh the scorer, but by that time I was almost hiding behind the sofa.
We should have got back on the bike straight away against Derby in front of our own fans, but such was the sterling performance by visiting goalkeeper Lee Grant that I was pulling my hair out by full time. We managed to breach his defences once, when Tuyp headed home from a corner, but that was merely an equaliser after Ian Taylor’d first half opener, and it was all we could force before the end. League Position: 6th Players In:
Joleon Lescott [22, DC, English, 2 U-21 caps] £325,000 signing from Wolves
I had begun to be a little worried about the number of goals we were conceding, which was certainly more than any other side in the top six, and Joleon was an excellent prospect to improve our rear guard. Jack Tuyp [21, SC, Dutch, 6 U-21 caps, 2 goals] £1,500,000 signing from Groningen
The sales of Ellington and Roberts north of the border left us light in the attacking department, and the Dutchman ticked the boxes of being both cheap and talented. He may not be the sort of player to do much work outside the box, but he could certainly find the net if you got the ball to him. Players Out:
Steve McMillan (£100,000 to Walsall) Nathan Ellington (£2,000,000 to Gretna) Jason Roberts (£1,200,000 to Celtic)
Per Frandsen (£1,000 to Gimnástic) John Filan (£140,000 to Coventry) Bosman free transfers arranged:
Pieter Collen [24, DRC, Belgian, 1 cap] joins on 2nd July 2005 from Feyenoord Kenny Lunt [25, AMRLC, English] joins on 1st July 2005 from Crewe Marcio Junquiera [20, AMRLC, Dutch] joins on 2nd July 2005 from Emmen Anders Svensson [28, AMRLC, Swedish, 52 caps, 10 goals] joins on 1st July 2005 from Southampton |

Our game against Plymouth at Home Park attracted the live TV cameras, and it seemed our players were determined to perform in front of them. A first half goal from Bent, striking the ball low and and past Luke McCormick, was scant reward for the domination we had shown. The second half bore more fruit, however, once Jack Tuyp had replaced Bent up front as the Dutchman continued his impressive start in English football, bagging himself a hat-trick.
Back to back wins weren’t coming along all that regularly, but with Millwall visiting us at the JJB, it looked good that we could bag the second win. We came close to taking the lead on a number of occasions, but our finishing wasn’t good enough, so I was thankful that Scott Gemmill came to our rescue, heading beyond his own goalkeeper from Aaron Lennon’s corner. Kevin Cooper made it harder to keep our lead when he picked up a second yellow card, but it wasn’t enough to stop us, Johansson making sure of the points late on.
Despite Leeds being in contention at the sharp end of the table – at least for play-off places if not for automatic promotion – their manager, Kevin Blackwell, was coming under enormous pressure from his board. I, however, felt no guilt at adding to that pressure as we left Elland Road with a two goal victory, Bent scoring in first half injury time and Perez adding a second late in the second half.
The biggest game of my time in charge so far came with a visit to the Riverside Stadium to face Middlesbrough in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Fifteen minutes in, I wished I was back in Wigan as we had already fallen two goals behind, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Malcolm Christie doing the damage. Somehow we managed to pull level by half-time – certainly more by luck than design – a Perez double making my team-talk a whole lot easier. I was still expecting defeat, I must admit, but we began to play with a much greater authority, and goals from Ligüera and Bent put us into a home quarter final tie against Newcastle.
There was bound to be a comedown after such a win, and it happened in the home match against Leicester. Despite Dion Dublin’s 39th minute red card for the visitors, we were unable to even come close to breaking them down, and only some sharp saves from Hedman ensured we held onto a point.
A short and busy month ended with a visit to Crewe’s Alexandra Stadium, where we ensured that we sailed through Februaru unbeaten and that I was named Manager of the Month. Mark Rivers had obligingly missed a penalty early on for the home side, and Tuyp made him pay for the mistake with a well-taken headed goal. The Dutchman added a second after the break, but not before Ligüera had grabbed one of his own in a performance that fully deserved his man of the match award. League Position: 5th Players In:
Lee Grant [22, GK, English, 4 U-21 caps] £1,000,000 signing from Derby
Such had been the impression he made on me during our January game against Derby, Lee jumped straight to the top of my wanted list of goalkeepers. Having sold John Filan the previous month and still being unimpressed by the talents of Gary Walsh, I wanted to bring another 'keeper in, and Lee certainly appeared talented enough to put pressure on Magnus Hedman in the #1 shirt.

Ashley Young’s Wigan career stuttered when he twisted his knee in training, an injury that would keep him out of action for the entire month. The first game he missed was our home match against Q.P.R. We didn’t play particularly well at any point during the game, but such was the confidence we had gained over the previous month we did enough to grab the win, Bent heading home the only goal just before the interval.
That run of confidence came to a juddering halt three days later, however, with a trip north to face Sunderland. Sean Thornton and Joleon Lescott had traded goals before half-time, and we looked good for the points when Ligüera stepped up to net from the penalty spot after he had been felled by Mart Poom. But Thornton was on a mission to down us, and he twice scored from outside the area in the final ten minutes to condemn us to defeat.
The continuation of our F.A. Cup adventure was our next engagement. Having beaten one North-East side in the fifth round, our quarter final opponents were Newcastle at the JJB. We had none of the problems against the Magpies that we had against ‘Boro, Bent driving a shot past Given in the thirteenth minute, giving us a lead which was added to by Perez just past the half-hour mark. Newcastle never looked like pulling the gap back and we were content to sit on the two goals we had, and when the draw for the semi-finals placed us against Charlton, I began dreaming of a place in the final.
Just as after the Middlesbrough game, there was an inevitable come-down after our Cup heroics against Newcastle, and Wolves were this time the team to benefit. We created plenty of chances, but Stuart Taylor was in fine form, and Dean Sturridge grabbed the only goal of the match, deep into the second half.
The end of the month saw a break from action for international call-ups, so our game against Coventry on the 19th was the last time we would take to the field in March. By the time an hour had passed, we were well in command with a three goal lead, Thomson and Bent scoring before half-time and Tuyp adding to their efforts just moments after coming on. We relaxed a little too much, however, and goals from Andy Morrell and Eddie Johnson had us panicking in the closing minutes, but we held on. Just.
The win came at a cost though, as both Darren Bent and Leighton Baines had to be helped from the pitch. Bent had suffered strained knee ligaments which would keep him out for a month, whilst Baines’ injury was more serious, a torn calf muscle that meant he wouldn’t play again this season. League Position: 5th Players In:
Ryan Garry [21, DLC, English] 3 month loan from Arsenal
Brought in as injury cover for Leighton Baines, Garry would be understudy for Lekgetho as we rounded out the season. He didn’t look too impressive in his first training sessions, but he was the best of what was available at the time.

With only seven games left to bag our place in the play-offs, we needed to pick up some wins in quick order to ensure that we weren’t scrabbling around for points on the final day. It started against Ipswich at Portman Road, and though Perez was injured early on, we snuck away with a single goal victory, Tuyp netting just before half-time.
Ashley Young returned to the team for the trip to Upton Park, but West Ham were in no mood to be charitable to him. Though Alan Mahon struck a free kick into the top corner in just the second minute, the home side were the better side throughout and goals from Malky Mackay and Matt Etherington put them in front by half time. Etherington struck a second after the break and we dropped back down to sixth in the table.
A blow was struck before our trip to the Millennium Stadium, Jacob Lekgethon fell awkwardly in training and damaged his shoulder, meaning Ryan Garry would make his debut for the club in the F.A. Cup semi-final match against Charlton. Garry, however, played an outstanding game, keeping the flying Dennis Rommedahl in his pocket throughout.
However, we had no such luck with Dean Kiely, the Irishman providing heroics to keep us from scoring any of the hundreds of chances we created. What was even worse was the seventy-first minute sucker punch delivered by Kevin Lisbie, it was the only goal of the match and denied us the place in the final we felt we deserved.
The determination not to let what happened in Cardiff get us down was obvious in our game at Vicarage Road, and before Watford knew what had hit them, they were three goals down. Gareth Whalley struck first, a deflected effort that should really have gone down as an own goal, but there was no doubting the veracity of Estoyanoff’s and Tuyp’s claims for their strike, both well placed headers beyond Kostas Chalkis.
Ryan Garry had excelled against Watford after his impressive cup debut, so when Lekgetho came back into contention for the visit to Preston, it was only as a substitute that he made the trip to Deepdale. Darren Bent was also on the bench, and would make his return to action late on. We fell behind early on to a Chris Lucketti goal, but were soon level through Uruguayan international Mart*n Ligüera. Another after fifteen minutes, this time from Garry, put us in front, so that when Bent came on in the final ten minutes, his two goals wrapped up the three points.
The race for the four play-off places was getting tighter all the time, with five clubs all believing they would end up with a chance of promotion. Wolves and Leicester were out of sight in the automatic spots, but we were looking healthy in fifth spot with a game in hand.

3rd Nottm Forest 44 games 84 points4th Leeds 44 games 83 points5th Wigan 43 games 81 points6th Derby 44 games 78 points7th Reading 44 games 78 points

We finally had another home game when Burnley called in at the JJB, and after our successes on the road, I was confident we could make our game in hand count. And that we did. Kevin Cooper got us underway on the quarter hour, and though it took until the final five minutes, when two goals from Alan Mahon sealed the points, we never looked in danger of losing our lead.
We were at home again three days later against Brighton, knowing that a single point would ensure our place in the play-offs. We had some nervous moments in the game, Brighton have obviously not turned up with no intention to play, but we fought hard and come the final whistle, the point we needed was ours, and we could relax in our final game.

The final game of the regular season saw us travel to relegation threatened Sheffield United. We began in the sort of form we had shown in the second half of the season, Ligüera continuing his incredible scoring season with a volley from twelve yards and Perez following that up with a wonderful effort of his own. That match turned in the 65th minute when Ligüera hit the post with a penalty, United were reinvigorated and goals from Andy Gray and Steve Kabba pulled them level before the end.
Finishing fifth meant a play-off semi-final against Nottingham Forest, the first leg at the JJB. I wasn’t overly confident about that match, but I had reckoned without Mart*n Ligüera. The Uruguayan midfielder scored once in each half and created numerous chances for our attacking players that went unfinished.
The second leg was an easier affair, with a two goal lead to protect at the City Ground, we simply packed the defence with more bodies than they could get around. We barely mounted an attack in the match, but did enough to ride out a goalless draw and book a place in the final against Derby.
Over 70,000 people turned up at the Millennium Stadium to see us take on Derby for a place in the promised land. Having not beaten them in the two league encounters during the season, we were understandably second favourites. We hadn’t read the script though, as Perez netted from Alan Mahon’s cut-back after just thirteen minutes. We could have had two or three more before the break, but had to settle for the win being assured just after the hour when Young knocked Mahon’s cross into Tuyp’s path and the Dutchman drilled his shot into the corner of the net.
