Cheers lads, nice to know people are following the story

PM - I hadn't heard of them till my Watford story so thats where I knew they would be good

---

January 2008 - New Year, Same old story...

The New Year had promised to be a make or break period for Sven and his team, and with a few difficult games on the horizon he Sven wanted his players to be fully focused. The first test of the new year saw a trip to London and West Ham play as their hosts. It turned out to be an easier game than many would have thought, with a brace from Darius Vassell in the first half enough to seal the points. The home side did not have their cause helped when Bellamy was given a straight red card for an elbow in mid-air, but it was still a solid performance and a good win

There was a little break from Premiership action next, as Wigan paid a visit to Eastlands in the third round of the F.A Cup. It was a dull game, both sides suffering from belated hangovers, and it looked as if Paul Scharner's 63rd minute goal might be enough to sent the visitors through, but two minutes from time, substitute Mika Aaritalo rammed home the equaliser for his debut goal and to earn a replay at the JJB

Another home game provided an easy test, with Billy Davies' struggling Derby County the opponents. Sven saw his players control the game with ease through the 90 minutes, and three first half goals sealed the points. The first two came from Argentinian striker Mauro Zarate who scored after 3 and 17 minutes, before he made ther second goal, his darting run into the box forcing a tackle and winning the penalty. That was duly converted by Bianchi right on half time, and it was another three points for the team

The F,A Cup replay against Wigan should have been tough, but the home side just didn't get out of the blocks. A goal in either half was enough, with Darius Vassell and a stoppage time penalty from Italian Rolando Bianchi sent Sven and his side into the hat for the fourth round, where they would face non-league Hereford

With the games coming thick and fast, a trip to the capital came again, and this time the opponents were Fulham. Despite seeing his side control the game, they had to wait until just before the half time interval to find the breakthrough, as Bianchi headed home the cross. The second came just after half time, with Brazilian midfielder Elano firing home from the edge of the box. David Healy pulled one back on 67 minutes, but the game was sealed three minutes later when Aaritalo volleyed home and sent the side to another win

The B.B.C cameras were keen on an upset when we visited Edgar Street to take on non-league Hereford. Sven knew that it should be comfortable, but he just wanted to get over the hurdle and avoid a massive giant-killing. In the end, one goal was enough to do this, as Michael Johnson turned his man and fired into the bottom corner on 62 minutes to send the team through

January would end with a visit by Aston Villa, and just like everybody else that month, they were dispatched with a defeat. The visitors did take the the lead though, as Luke Moore headed home on 50 minutes, but the man of the moment and former Villa player Darius Vassell got his side and Sven out of the mire, with a brace in the space of 8 minutes to keep up the terrific form of the team

February 2008 - Spring Blooms

The start of the Springtime in England would herald a difficult start for Sven and his team, as they travelled to Anfield to open up the month against Liverpool. Injuries had started to plague the squad, meaning three or four of the first team regulars were out, so when Andriy Voronin headed home after less than three minutes it looked grim. But the side showed many of the fighting qualities that Sven had instilled in them when they drew level, Italian striker Bianchi firing home to send them in level. The home side finished the match though just after the hour, Voronin grabbing his second and sending them to three points

Another away game followed that, as Sven and his side travelled to the Stadium of Light. Sunderland were desperate to avoid relegation, so Sven was expecting a tough game, but it turned out to be a cakewalk, as his side hit five past a helpless Wearsiders. It was four by half time, as a brace from Bianchi and a double from Brazilian Elano secured the game, but the home side did get back into the game with two goals in three minutes from Judt and Chopra, but the final goal came when the Italian striker completed his hat-trick and catapulted Sven's side to a 5-2 win

The F.A Cup fifth round saw West Ham make the trip to Eastlands, with both sides looking to progress into the quarter finals. The visitors tok the initiative and went in front, as England striker Dean Ashton headed home. Sven saw his side draw level within 60 seconds, as Yoann Gouffran scored his first for the club, and his side went in at half time in front, thanks to Finnish striker Mika Aaritalo, and through the second half it looked as though 2-1 would be the final score, but into injury time, the visitors earnt a replay, Craig Bellamy using his pace and slotting the ball home for the Londoners

Bolton were the next league visitors to Eastlands, and once Sven's side took the lead through Mauro Zarate they should have pushed on and won the game, but two goals from Nicolas Anelka in the second half looked as though it could steal the game, but four minutes from time Rolando Bianchi headed home the equaliser and settled the match with a point

The replay against West Ham was a dull affair, neither side able to find the breakthrough in the 90 minutes of normal time or the additional 30 minutes of extra time, and the game headed into penalties. The first 9 penalties were shared, with both sides scoring three a piece, and it was Craig Bellamy who stepped up for his side, but the Welshman put his kick wide of the post. This left it up to Zarate, and the Argentinian made no mistake, slotting home and sending Sven and the side into the quarter finals

March 2008 - Blues go Marching on

March was a busy month for Sven and his side, and the first of six games saw a trip to North London and Tottenham. The home side really took it to Sven's side, and he found his team going into the half time interval two nil behind, as goals from Darren Bent and Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov were enough to seal the points, although an own goal from Younes Kaboul did get City back into it, but it wasn't enough

The F.A Cup quarter final brought Merseysiders Everton to Manchester, and as with the replay against West Ham, it was a dull game. This time, one goal was enough to win, as a 55th minute strike from Brazilian midfield maestro Elano sent Sven and the team into the semi finals of the competition

Another home game followed for Sven and his side, as they welcomed fellow Lancastrians Blackburn to Eastlands. It turned out to be a stunning game, and the first 45 minutes saw five goals. The first came after three minutes, when Zarate volleyed home, and when he scored his second just after the half hour the visitors had gone 2-1 up thanks to goals from Jason Roberts an a stunning 30 yard drive from Roque Santa Cruz. Sven saw his Argentinian striker complete his hat-trick in the 38th minute, but the visitors scored an equaliser and got a well deserved point through Robbie Savage, as he drilled the ball home from 20 yards in the 68th minute.

An away trip to the South Coast was next, and Sven saw his side triumph 3-0 over a lacklustre Portsmouth side. All three goals came in the first half, and once in form Zarate headed home in the third minute it was academic. The second was a typical goal from Vassell, as he used his pace and slotted home, before Elano curled home a masterful free-kick in the 34th minute to seal the win and the points

The City of Manchester Stadium was paid a visit by Newcastle next, and the reception given to Joey Barton on his return to the ground was hostile to say the least. His side did take the lead twice though, with goals from Ameobi and Steve Sidwell, but Sven's side came through as 3-2 winners, with a brace from Elano and the winner coming via Franchman Gouffran, his first Premiership goal for the club

The final game of the month saw a visit to title chasers Chelsea. The home side were on good form, and when Andriy Shevchenko slotted home after 11 minutes, that form looked to be continuing. The Ukranian doubled his own and his teams tally two minutes into the second half, but a Darius Vassell gave hope to City. The chances were there to equalise, but it wasn't to be and Chelsea ran out as winners in a pulsating game

April 2008 - April Fools...

By a quirk of the fixture list, Chelsea were the opponents again a few days later, although this tim the game was an F.A Cup semi-final. Once again, Avram Grant's team showed their superiority as they ran out with a 3-1 win, although it wasn't without controversy, as the openeing goal from Michael Ballack saw the Germans tood offside. Still, it mde no difference, and when goals came from Ukranian Shevchenko and Macedonian Pandev, it was game over. Even a sublime goal from Elano meant nothing, and the Londoners advanced to the final

A home game against Steve Bruce's Birmingham should have provided an easier test, but they played exceptionally well, fully deserving their point. They could have had all three, and when they went ahead through Garry O'Connor it looked like they might get it, but Bianchi rescued his side and gave them a point

Everton would be the next game, and it was a dour, boring, dull game in which neither side gave any real test to the goalkeeper. A 0-0 draw was more than fitting, and the only thing of note was a headbutt from Shaleum Logan which everybody missed, meaning he could count himself a very lucky boy to still be on the field when the final whistle blew

The second Manchester derby of the season against the Champions Man Utd was an interesting affair, and despite the visitors going 2-0 up through Scholes and Ronaldo, Sven and his side could count themselves unlucky. Elano pulled one back with a penalty on the hour, but it wasn't enough and the red side of Manchester went away with the points

April ended with a trip to the JJB, and Wigan provided the opposition. They had consolidated well, and were looking for a European spot, so they started well. They got the lead through Paul Scharner but Sven saw his side level things up through Gouffran. Both sides scored a goal a piece to finish the game, with Aghahowa scoring for the home side while Vedran Corluka grabbed his first goal in a City shirt to ensure the proceedings ended all square

May 2008 - End of season blues

Two more games finished off Sven's first campaign in charge of City, with the first of these seeing Arsenal pay a visit to Eastlands. Despite finishing the match on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline, City didn't play badly, and this was stated by the fact that Lukasz Fabianksi was awarded man of the match. The visitors had to wait until the 65th minute to score, when Emmanuel Adebayor powered home the header, but two goals in the finla ten minutes from Robin van Persie sealed the points for Arsenal

Reading were the final league opponents of the season, and they had had a terrific season thus far. Sven wanted his side to end on a high note, with a win, seen as they hadn't won for 7 games, since they defeated Newcastle at Eastlands. Reading had other ideas, and when Dudu Cearense cancelled out Rolando Bianchi's opener, that is how it stayed, and Sven was diappointed to finish the season without a win in 8 games
