Default The Turmoils of an Indian Manager: Not your usual story

Hi all,
I haven't been able to contribute much over the past few months due to Final year University kicking in. However, I feel like I am missing something; so I wish to take another stab at story writing.
But here, it will be different. I am not going to write a story, but rather, try and explain thins in a poem-format. Since I am not an acclaimed poet, the proses might be trivial, even funny (not in the lol way!) to read. But the way it would be written, it should be easy on the eyes. Hopefully it should be worth the read. More importantly, I am enjoying doing this

I am using FM 7.0.2; Huge database, only India loaded up. I am the national manager.

September 2006

The call was quick, the message clear;
I was the new manager, of my Indiadear.

Their form was poor, the morale was low;
The past three games showed our progress was slow.

The task was tough, and I knew I could fail;
And a measly cheque, was all I got in the mail.

Our game against the Arabs, wasn’t going to be easy;
Ranks differing by fifty-six, the fixture made me queasy.

I pushed my players, and prodded them to win;
But all I got in the end, was more turmoil within.

We lost by two goals, another loss I was told;
Will this continue, as my career will unfold?

Next were the Argentines, a surprise friendly trip;
They did show come character, with Crespo whipping a chip.

Still we handled the game, well enough to reclaim some pride,
And a goal by Bhutia, due to offside was denied.

Thanks Haowan, really appreciate the comments

November 2006

Our next game was in 4 days, the opponents were Japan;
With no points in the qualifiers, I really needed a plan.

Sticking with the basic 4-4-2, I decided to attack;
We managed to draw the game, but couldn’t keep our dignity intact.

Three goals we had scored, they had done so too;
We had a shot at redemption, and a win was now overdue.

We had failed to qualify, but were visiting Yemen next,
A beautiful place I was told, something we had to annex.

129th we were now placed, a win could move us up;
It was a long, long road, to the coveted World Cup.

“When can we get there?”, at an interview I was asked;
“Not before 2050”, so massive was this task.

In the game against Yemen, a depleted squad we carried;
In the minutes that followed, many Yemen shots were parried.

We did turn the tables, grabbing a win in the end;
With a slender lead of 1 goal, our winless record we did mend.

Thanks for the kind words Apoorv. I am not finding being an Indian manager easy, but then it was never supposed to be!

January 2007

A few months did pass, as I twiddled my thumbs;
The FA was satisfied, and I could hear the sounds of drums.

The friendly was nigh, and Ghana was the team;
Bhutia was nervous, it was like he would scream.

I was nervous too, hoping we would at-least draw;
We had to clutch this game, through the end of the straw.

Ghana shot and shot, tried 14 times in all;
But Mukhi played well, keeping his eyes on the ball.

We lost 2-0, it could have been worse;
This Indian job was proving, to be a big-bad curse.

However, next time could be easy, so I was told;
Cameroon was the enemy, and all tickets were sold.

The match arrived, forth-eight days later;
New addition was Venkatesh, the midfielder, the creator.

He was a good midfielder, the whole team respected him;
But still without Bhutia, our chances looked slim.

We did put up a fight, losing one-nil in the end;
But we were not contenders, neither we could pretend.

September 2007

Waiting for next game, that was five months away;
I got another call, and I had to obey.

The under-23’s were playing, Olympics was the tie;
Well actually it was qualifiers, so what I said was a lie.

Still we played in the tournament, Cambodians in the first round;
We did manage to win, leaving our critics astound.

Then next were the Aussies, with their kangaroos hopping high;
It really was a tough tie, the toughest Olympics could supply.

Bulgarians then came marching, to a friendly at Salt Lake;
It would be a tall-order, nothing we couldn’t take.

We played well, and managed to draw the game;
Venky’s 35-yarder free-kick, proved our side wasn’t tame.

Then came McClaren’s England, 7th they were placed;
It was a big battle, well, biggest we ever faced.

We were humbled quickly, the score read two-nil;
Carson was the keeper, but we couldn’t score one still.

November 2007

Back to the under-23’s, the Aussies we were facing;
An away game it was, and sent everyone’s pulse racing.

We did eventually lose, and three-nil was the score;
Being all temperamental, I managed to punch the door.

My hand was now sore, but I didn’t care;
What worried me more was my team, which was now worse for wear.

We did try hard, to win the home game;
In the end we lost, and the whole team was to blame.

We failed to get a shot; we were played out of the match;
I was a national joke; I should have known this was a catch.

The selectors were laughing, smiling with all their money;
Cashing in on my misery, but I didn’t find it funny.

Well we had to try again, playing host to the Russians;
Hopefully from this game, we won’t face any repercussions.

We were out to shock, the 19th seed in the list;
With us seeded at 110, I wondered if there was a twist.

The assault was quick; we did score two goals;
But they scored 5, picking our defensive holes.
