The confidence was justified and a last minute goal from Wallner handed my side a 1-0 win at Inverness. We were buzzing now and welcomed St. Mirren to Pittodrie. We led 3-1, and although they pegged us back to level, we pushed on and won 6-3, a remarkable triumph.

The next game was a 1-1 draw at Hearts - a decent result, though a game we might have won. It was a similar story as we lost 3-1 at home to Dundee United, we dominated and the team looked to be gelling. That evening Stuart Milne called me at home and dismissed me. For the first time in my career I was unemployed and I had no idea why.

Not that far downhill. And I'm only writing at all cos I felt I had to follow up that 9-9 draw.

A good writer can do well with even the most distasteful of subjects.

Note of Interest: After firing Gary McAllister and myself, Aberdeen hired Tommy Söderburg and then fired him, hired Jimmy Nicholl and then fired him before hiring Jim Jefferies for the last game of the season, who got them relegated. All within a month or so.

Six months at Piacenza was enough for both of us. I had joined with relegation unlikely and promotion impossible. Sure enough we weren't relegated and didn't get promoted. I was on my way in to the manager's office to resign when he phoned to sack me. Fortunately I had my bags with me and simply headed straight for the airport.

Five months later I was getting antsy, the press had linked me heavily with the Celtic and Hearts jobs, but it was instead to Ayrshire that I returned and SPL side Kilmarnock. It was a shock for both Kilmarnock and Ayr fans, but for sure I was a professional and I would give my best effort, at least until something better came along.

In the wake of my departure from Ayr a good friend of mine was tempted to move from America. Chirpy McCheery, fresh from a homeless shelter, had been appointed at Somerset and carried on my good work, achieving promotion through the playoffs, winning 8-0 on aggregate over Queen's Park in the Final. It would be nice to see him in the SPL in a few years time.

Except, I wouldn't be there to greet him. Less than six months at Kilmarnock and they, too, were sick of me. I was fired.

Determining that I had no aptitude as a footballer, I moved into a new career as a plumber, earning more than most managers earn and enjoying my work as I went along.

What did they know anyway! I was still a hero in Ayr, having brought them dazzling football and sabotaging their rivals, and I never again had to pay for a pint in the Honest Toon.
