Default Silk/satin tutorial or advice

You would think somewhere out there is a silk/satin tutorial, but I can't find one that works for me. I only found 1 and it didn't even come close to turning out. [bustagut]

I'm trying to create a smooth red silk/satin (are they the same? :B ) effect so that I can place a picture on top of it, so it will have a border effectamajig.

I have came up with this sample so far by using Clouds, plastic wrap, radial blur and liquify. It's close but not quite what I want.

I'm looking for more of a smooth flow. so I can put some text on it as well.

The red isn't quite dark enough either.. that much I can fix. I think 8}

Any suggestions how to calm this wrinkled version down? I tried to smudge it, but lost the shine. Or point me to a tutorial I missed.

Thanks in advance

Hi Sheba, you are on the right track, [righton] but try it without the Plastic Wrap. It creates highlights which are too sharp.
You need highlights & shading with a softer edge.

Maybe try using a Curves Adjustment layer on a duplicate layer and twiddle the blending modes instead.
Or what about Satin in the Styles palette? I haven't tried it but it might be a start.

There was a sort of silk/ satin thread a while back next door at PST.
Might be worth a look over there.

I'll see if I can rattle up a quickie sample for you shortly.

Cheers, Al.

Sheba, The Satin tutorial by Raphael is still active.

It is under user submitted tutorials, but the easiest way is to log in and put Satin and Raphael in the search fields. I comes up first on the list.

I don't want to link directly in case it requires log-in for access.

HTH, cheers, Al.

\:]

The second sample in that thread is awesome! More realistic but he never comes back and explains how he did it other than offering a few tips at first. So I've just tried going off of what they suggest.

This is what I've come up with so far, and I'm still not totally pleased with it, but it will work better than the first version. I did learn through experimenting that it's easier to make a black version rather than the red version.

I'm still trying to define better shadows and highlights to give it a realistic look. And not make so many creases in the 'fabric'. \:]

Anyway, thanks for your help Rantin Al.. you definitely pointed me in the right direction.

That's the way to do it Sheba.

It was quite an old thread, maybe you would need to wait a bit for a reply.

He did say at the end of the instructions that some settings would probably need tweaking.

I didn't explain that quite right ( I do that a lot :B ) I never posted in the thread, I just meant everyone who asked him how he did it.. he said he would post a tutorial but never did. And I figured after 2 years it was a safe bet that he is isn't going to. [bustagut]

Thanks again.
