This is exactly my biggest concern about FM 2008. I have been playing the game with the official 8.0.1 patch for a few days getting some 10 matches deep into the first season of English Conference South with Cambridge.

Unfortunately so far I got only one "9" for the player, who scored a hat-trick in the game I won 4:1. My observation is that the players are normally getting one of three ratings: "6", "7" or "8". To get more they have to be absolutely flying over the pitch.

You may say that this is realistic in the sense that in the newspapers usualy you don't see "10" at all etc. However, I strongly dislike this approach for one extremaly imporant reason - average ratings of players is a main factor for quick assesment of your players that lets you distinguish one from another. This AVR makes the face of the player. The change of avr in subsequent seasons used to show the development path etc. Now this change is rather little, the trend is more flat and all the players look much more similar. Variety is lost to big degree, because the difference between players that have 7.08 and 7.12 is less visible than when it is like, say, 7.08 and 7.27. I would really hope that the system of ratings is looked into very thoroughly. I may understand that "10" is less likely to get than it was in the previous versions. However, "9" should be still a bit easier to get. If the ratings between 5 and 9 were achievable often enough, it would provide a basis and room for the required variety.

Besides, I have a strong feeling that some of the post match stats have no influence on the after match rating. I especially mean interceptions. Sometimes a player can have like 15 interceptions and still get 5 or 6, even though the rest of the post match stats are as well on a decent level.
Besides, to get something over 8 you really need goals / assists. This way a defender doesn't seem to be likely to get a "9" or "10" even if he plays an absolutely flawless defensive game. That make the defenders somehow handicaped in this area

When I read the list of changes showing the path of patch development I coud notice that at the end of the process SI "tuned down the ratings half way back to the initial version". I think that this was simply a bad idea. Forget the full adherence to the tendency newspaper present. In this game ratings have additional meaning, the add value and facilitate the imagination that this game heavily relies on. I would expect that ratings are taken on the schedule for the next patch. This system has to be improved to enhance the pleasure coming from the game

Forgive me some potentialy unusual ways of expression used in the post. English is not my native language.
