Default trieving the frank mark from an image of a postal stamp

Hello all. \:] I am the newbie of newbies when it comes to PS. I am 52 yrs old and competent with normal office type programmes but am trying to help out a friend with this issue. We have an image of a stamp which has a text overprint. We would like to be able to take off the overprint and save it as a seperate image. PS has caused me a BIG headache with its Layers, Channels etc and I'm really not sure even where I should be looking to do this. I really would be grateful for any assistance and direction pointing that is offered. I am using PS 6 if that helps.

Hullo and welcome Franck.
Age is no barrier here, I'm just '1' behind you.

You (we, us, I?) might be able to help you achieve your mission.
The best thing would be to post the image of the stamp and throw it to the hounds around here to chew over.

I'm up for the challenge anyway. :B

Scan the stamp and keep as much detail as possible, maximum jpg quality. Adjust the file size to 100k max for posting here.

Cheers, Al.

Better yet, if there is a website you can link to with a high resolution image (150 k is the limit here), we can then download the high res to play with.

Default Retrieving the frank mark from an image of a postal stamp

Many thanks folks for the interest and offers to help.
The original was scanned in at 600dpi and saved as a tiff file at 7mb. When I open the tiff file and save it as a jpg with the Jpg options, Image options set to 0 (small file), the best I can get is a 120Kb file. Any suggestions how to drop it some more please so I can post it as suggested.

I love a challenge.

Try this:

Open the original 600 dpi file.
Select > Save for web.
There ids a small drop-down button to the right where it says Settings.
Click on it and scroll down to 'Optimize to File Size'.
Set it to 100k.
Click OK and save it as it is.

This should give a jpg of the same pixel dimensions but at 72dpi.

It is still too big to post as an image file. So....
Zip the file and add this as an 'Attachment'
You will see the dialogue in the post a reply box.
Put in a file comment, click the Add Attachment button.
Then Submit.

I tried this with a base 3"x3" @ 600dpi, 7Mb psd file and got it down to 93k.
It should be enough for folk to play with, [saywhat] , I hope.
As long as there are not too many colours in the original.

The pic below will help you find your way.
Cheers, Al.

[bustagut] Challenges? :B

No problem, Ferlin. As long as the info is useful to someone, I don't mind.

Cheers, Al.
