Like many, I've found myself the victim of the Chairman issue. I've just had them sell Charles Andre Doudin - my best striker - to Real Madrid for £11.5mil.
To be honest, I would probably have sold him anyway. I like the challenge of finding better replacements and my defence needs some changes too, so the money would come in handy.
However, why not allow some sort of appeal process? As the bid comes in, the message you're given in response reads;
"<Your Chairman> proposes to accept this bid as it is too good to turn down".
You're then offered a drop down box with two options;
"Ask Chairman to Reconsider"
"Allow"
Asking the Chairman to reconsider would put some statistical wizbang into motion which looks at how important the player is to the squad, current form and potential, all of which then works to determine whether the player is dispensable.
This would fundamentally allow three things; let's say someone bids for your star striker, who's scored 20 goals by January. His form would mean the chairman may reconsider or may choose to accept the offer.
Say, also, a bid is made for your brightest prospect. On appeal, the squad is examined by this mechanism which discovers he is indeed head and shoulders the brightest prospect. Again, this will mean the mechanism reconsiders and allows the bid to be rejected.
I appreciate what I'm asking sounds like a bit of work; but I genuinely think it would add a degree of realism. After all, very few bids are automatically accepted in this manner without a manager's input. Even if that input is ignored!

Although playing as Huddersfield I've never encountered thie issue of the chairman selling players over my head, I can imagine how annoying it must be.... Especially since there's no way to complain about it.
I'd suggest adding a third option for issuing the board an ultimatum to the board for use in the most extreme cases.
perhaps an EDT file that disables this feature for human managers, I don't like playing for a couple of seasons where you may get to "like" a specific player, who you imagine being a Maldini one club man, only for the chairman to sell him for money you don't even need. Some like the ultra realism I personally prefer to have total control over transfers, the option would be nice
This is probably my biggest isse with the game right now. For instance I bought Juan Pablo Herrera for cheap, then 7 months later I get bid for 400k and my chariman forces me to sell, eventhough I'm well on profit side and he was my best player. And there's nothing I could do.
I wish they added some feature and fix for this, because it's very discouraging to even go out there and try find some talent, because you always have fear on your back that your chairman will sell him very soon. It'd be acceptable and all good if chairman would be more patient and force on real big money offers or when club finances are poor, but when finances are good, player is one of your key players...then selling this player for bargain price is pretty silly in my opinion.
I'll add another suggestion on this issue: Maybe on very rare occasions when you have done well and all that and it's contract renewal time and your board obviously wants to keep you...you could add some kind of Absolute freedom ( regarding player deals within the budget clause on your contract, which would mean board would let you decide these things.
