It's not like he's the first nor last player that might be a bit overrated in the game. If he was South American (or Icelandic) you wouldn't have touched him. What was the need? It's not like he was the best striker in the game even nearly!
Probably needed to be done, everyone knew about him and he's basically a money cheat in the first season because he's so cheap will without fail go for heaps a in January or at the end of season one.
like you said, there are heaps of cheap overrated players - go find another one to use at the start of the game.

It's not like there aren't other players, who are great prospect in the game even when they aren't as good in real life. It would be dull if there weren't.

Well then why wasn't Pablo Piatti made worse then for example? He can be bought just as cheap as Ääritalo, his value rockets and in my Bolton game when i signed him, Real Madrid were after him before the end of the first season. I doubt he's that good irl is he? Ääritalo might not be as good as he was in 8.0.0 but if he wasn't a prospect at all, he wouldn't have been picked in the national team by Roy Hodgson.
he did ok for me in my luton team, i tried to resist selling him but my chairman stepped in and accepted a £6 million bid from fulham, he has been atrocious since he has been there.
