Upgrade from dual core to quad core for FM08? Worth it?
Hi there,
How much does FM08 take advantage of the extra cores?
Just a little background on my PC specs, it is a Core 2 Duo E4400 overclocked to 3.0GHz, 2GB RAM, Win XP SP2. I'm fairly tech savvy and I've seen no reason to upgrade to a quad core CPU... until now it seems.
Currently, FM08 runs OK, but I would still like a bit more speed (who wouldn't ) and the possibility to run more leagues for a realistic 'career mode' type of game.
I've noticed that FM maxes out both cores at 100% when there are a lot of matches being simulated (ie. start of FA cup qualifying rounds).
I assume a quad core would speed things up a lot under such circumstances? Theoretically, there should be a doubling in performance (or close to it) if all cores are fully loaded during match simulations, but I'm not sure just how optimized the code is in FM08 in terms of multithreading for quad cores.
If someone from SI can comment on this too, it would be great. Nothing better than getting a straight answer from the people who made the game.
Cheers.

Your conf. is great for playing FM08.
I disagree, I have a Q6600 cpu & all 4 cores are used to spread the processing load. Only now after 24 seasons with 80 leagues running does the cpu usage occassionaly max out.
SI have also stated that with teh threading option checked FM will use whatever cores are available.

Actually, there are a few games that support quad core, like Crysis and Supreme Commander, I just don't happen to play them.
Besides, FM is hardly your typical 3D game. It's more of a massive number cruncher, and in theory seems like a good candidate for improved performance from a quad core setup, since multiple match simulation threads can be spread over the 4 cores (in theory, at least).

That is good to know.
Geez, 80 leagues?! Is that like ALL the leagues in FM?

I upgraded from 2 to 4 cores and I can now play more leagues in less time with the same game responsiveness. This is with 4 cores at a slower clock rate than the 2.
