Hello all - good to find what seems such a friendly forum by looking at the other posts!

I am looking for urgent help - in effect I want to create text along a path (or even a elipse) - quite similar to the "the photoshop guru's handbook" logo at the top right of this page. I have numerous books/ bibles for photoshop - but I cannot get any of these to work for me! Your help would be very much appreciated,

Nice trick. But me doing mostly print work have one problem using text in PS and that is when placing such a creation in InDesign it turns into a bitmap image in the final PDF. Is there a way to keep it as vector or text?

Thank you for the quick reply - I did not expect one so soon!
I really want to get the snake effect - like the logo at the top of the page I will experiment and let you know how I get on. I have one early problem in trying this method though - I want the letters to follow an ellipse (orientated vertically) rather than a semicircle ,and they seem to distort horribly - however much I try to alter the horizontal/ vertical distortion. Is this something I have to live with, or can I either do some other form of compensating - or do I need to use a completely different method (I know photoshop appears to have what seems like hundreds of ways to achieve the same end!!!).

its a long shot, but if you have the new Photoshop CS, it actually has a command that allows you to type along a path... if not, when you go to use the text warp (as Mark stated before) instead of leaving it on arc, switch it to flag, then play around with the distortions... you should be able to get something like the picture below... hope that helps!

PS: apparently you have to click on the picture to get the full size... pretty small, it'll load quick

Actually there's no way to do that. And it specifically because PDFs can't do that. But i'm sure Adobe will get that hooked up sometime downthe road here.

Although... why would you want the text editable in PDF format? You should be able to import your doc into InDesign as editable. From there it's a quick switch to PDF. No?

If you try a couple tweaks, you may be able to obtain sufficient results. However, we need to bear in mind that PS doesn't have the highest quality type around.

Below are a couple examples.
Both were origianlly created a pure semi-circles. Then, the Distortion filter was used to 'stretch' the type in the desired direction to create an eliptical shape instead.

If character distortion should occur, your only real options are to make small adjustments to the height/width setting in the character/paragraph options dialogue. These need to be used in conjunction with the Distortion filter, because they too will stretch the type. In order to see how they effect your specific type, you'll simply have to use them.

Thanks to the help from all here - esp 101jinx101 and of course "the keeper" - I will play about with the settings and try to get my desired effect. I esp like the idea of writing along a path - but from what I have read that is only possible in CS - is that correct?

The text is editable in PS thats ok. But wheb I place the native Photoshop file in InDesign text and other vector parts turn in to pixels. I would prefer them to be vector.

Mybe I want to much out of this otherwise amazing sofware

Yes, it's correct that you can only type along a path in the latest photoshop version, Photoshop CS. Now, unless you have the extra $150 to upgrade, i think you'll have to go with another idea

That's too bad. I would've thought that InDesign CS would be able to import source PSD files and maintain their editability.

That's too bad. Kind of blows that ol' "Adobe program synergy" concept out the door huh?
