Default taking the harsh red from a sunburned face

I run into this problem often working on digital photos, maybe someone out there has a better technique than I do in reducing the red in a red face.

I know a bit about photoshop to I have tried all the common tools like the healing tool, hue/sat, an opaque brush, blur tools, etc.. so unless it's an uncommon trick.. I've probably tried it.

Like in a family portrait, the man's face is red where a woman can even her skin tones with make-up. So now I have the trick of reducing the red without draining it from the female's face.

I have played with the hue/saturation which seems to work the best and doesn't leave an artificial look.

Does anyone have any hints to isolating the hue in the mans face to reduce the red? Maybe that's asking too much.

Thanks for any input 8))

I always remove sunburns with blended layers. One of the layers is a layer which I correct using the channel mixer. The principle is to correct the oversaturated area in one channel with the information of one or both of the other channels. My technique is widely used by professionals. I can show you how it works if you post an image which a sunburn that I can use.

Another way of dealing with that issue would be to select the area for red reduction and create a new layer of the selection. Then use Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color... and adjust the reds.

Thanks abbe! I'll try that one on the next female face. I don't want to have a man look at his picture and say "What the hell did she do to my face?" I just want to take the red out and leave all the manly laugh lines.

Elysan, I'll see if I can find an image for an example. I would love to learn about channel mixing.

Welles, I tried your suggestion quick and that worked great! the results were better than anything I have came up with so far. Thanks so much!

Thanks to all of you. [excited]

Use the associated mask on the Hue & Saturation, Selective Colour or whatever Adjustment layer you are using.

Lots of subtle control over the adjustment and placement of the colour you are trying to adjust.

Create your Adjustment layer.
Make an overall correction to the image.
Adjust the Fill and/ or Opacity.
Fill the mask with Black.
Select a large soft paintbrush, set the brush opacity to a low setting.
Select White for foreground colour.
Paint in the areas on the mask where you need the ajustment applied.

Adjust and refine any of the above at any time.
Ain't Supreme Control wonderful? :B

Cheers, Al.
