Too many people who complain about the match engine don't take any time to understand it. They just watch the highlights and look at the end of match stats and conclude something must be wrong. If they watched the whole match on a reasonable speed, they'd start to see why things end up the way they do. For me this is by far the best match engine SI has ever put out, a big improvement on last year. But you wouldn't notice unless you paid attention.

Absolute Disgrace, 16 Nov 2007
By IJ Macintosh (London) - See all my reviews
Fun:
Firstly, I should point out that I've played every single version of this game since it first appeared on the Atari ST in 1992 with fictional player names and 45 minute loading times. I've played and loved these games for 15 years and I never dreamt that I'd have a bad word to say about any of them.
But this latest version is a slap in the face for hundreds of thousands of customers. It is so ludicrously riddled with bugs that it's impossible to play. There is a Beta Patch available, but it's like a sticking plaster to a gunshot wound. Whoever cleared this game for release should resign in shame.
I've been told that if I'm just patient, there will soon be another patch that fixes everything, but that isn't good enough. I didn't pay £30 for a half-finished game that I have to gradually bolt on extras to like some monthly Steam Railway binder collection, priced £3.99 from all good newsagents. When did it become acceptable to sell games that aren't finished? I don't buy a car and then sit there for four weeks waiting for my wheels to be delivered.
It's a sad day, a really sad day, but this will be the last time I ever give my money to SI Games
Ihave been saying that for ages

my main fear was how fm 07 felt a lttle over complicated with the tactics,
| If anything its more complicated now. I'm finding it extremely difficult. Having said that, if you mastered the previous versions you'll most likely master this one too, it's just a case of reseting yourself and finding out what works. People may not like that thats the way it is, but previous versions of FM needed a lot of tactical nous in order to succeed as well.
My advice is buy it, but be prepared to spend a copious amount of time playing until you get the satisfaction of having a winning team.

| Dude it's miles away from reality. Just play with a lower league team and see what the wingbacks do. That's one thing. Second, not everyone wants/has time to watch the full match. If one has to do it, the game may as well never leave the shelf. Thirdly, as long as there are too many comical errors, at any level, the game is a joke. If SI can't code the errors PROPERLY, then they shouldn't bother with them at all.

Well, I do enjoy FM08 straight out of the box. Haven`t patched it yet and don`t feel I need to.
Of course I`m going to one of these days but I was too lazy yet.
FM08 is way better than FM07 and if it is only for the better usability through an improved interface. FM07 collected dust on my shelf because I was too lazy to learn the ropes and the way to look up information or to proceed to match day and forgetting important stuff to adjust isn`t so in FM08 anymore.
Many complain about the skin. I like it.
Many complain about the match engine. I like it.
Are there flaws. Yes, there are but it is said that the patch helps a lot.
Oh, and I`m not a fanboy since I devoted my time solely to Championship Manager the past 2 seasons but this year SI won me over since it is a lot easier now to use FM and all the features resemble the life of a manger better than with other games of this genre.
