The game definately aint perfect, but you'd be really stupid to judge it before you get towards the end of your second season. Thats when the players you've bought begin to come together and the team you create looks totally different to the original squad you inherited.
For me, I started a game with England (championship upwards), Spain (Liga Secunda upwards) and Italy (Serie B upwards) and started unemployed. 9/12/2007, Wolves came in for me so I signed the contract. On FM06 I had a really good run with Wolves n got them into the Premiership. Not this time! I found myself unemployed after 86 games after only managing to move Wolves up by 4 more spaces to the mid-table.
17/03/2008 Ascoli came in for me towards the bottom of the table. I managed to get them to the midtable and now I'm half way through the final match during my SECOND season. We're 3rd in the league, 3 points behind 2nd placed Cagliari (and promotion) but with superior goal difference. If Cagliari win or drawagainst Lecce then they're up to Serie B. I need a win to have any chance.
Right now it's half time aaaaaaaand...
Lecce 1 - 0 Cagliari
Lecce = Abbruscato (9)
Cagliari = Schiavi sent off (28)
I'm having a whale of time too. Five seasons in and it's had everything. Ecstasy, heartbreak, success, failure, heroes, villains.... I now have no life though.
One thing...I didn't realise there were play off places in Serie B too. I beat Cagliari by a goal difference of 6, mainly down to my solid defence (for every goal I scored, I conceeded one which isn't bad).
I'm also loving this game. The highs and lows of lower league football is just so absorbing. I especially like the real time tactics, I enjoy the added pressure of making tactical changes and subs as the game is progressing, you sometimes have to rush you’re decisions and press that submit button as quick as possible! This version of FM for me, is simply the best management game i have ever played!!
The game is definately not perfect, but its still a whole lot of fun to play, that's for sure.
I like the reward you feel whenever you do change things drastically. In my first season at Ascoli I had a 4-4-2 style formation, with the wingers running in to help the strikers and it had varied results. I then signed players in on free transfers and shipped some players out, went for a 5-4-1 style formation with 3 defenders, 2 def. wingers, a def. mid, a mid, 2 attacking wingers and a striker. It lead to alot of wins but then grew stale and I started drawing about 4 games in a row before copping a loss. I changed things a little and removed my CM so I could have an extra striker, with my DM having an arrow so he could run in and out of the CM position. I thrashed Cagliari 5-0 and got that message saying my gamble paid off - and the result turned out to be vital to promotion as if they had have beaten me or drawn, I'd be in the play offs right now, not guaranteed promotion.
Its the 26th January 2010, I'm half way through my first season in Serie A with Ascoli.
Rock bottom.
20th with just 6 points on the board. Zero wins all season. Six draws. 14 losses. Scored 15 goals...conceeded 40.
Still...managed to recruit some players in the window that may give me a fighting chance. Plus I offloaded alot of the free transfers I got at the start of the season for a few million.
