ello again, hope peeps are still checkin in on this thread as I have another problemo, on the tree menu i have managed to get it to what i like it as. But, there is a horrible whitish box behind the wriiting and no amount of messing has gotten rid!

A little bump because this is basically on the same thing and I'm kinda hoping Ter can provide more words of wisdom. What's the file name(and where is it placed) for highlighting the stripes?

So I figured it out.
You have to create two new folders in your skins directory and add the two png files to those folders. Just follow ter's directions and create a folder called "table" and within the table folder create a folder called "custom". You need to create a couple of blank png files of whatever colour you want the background to be. I picked dark grey at 1028/768 resolution. Just stick each png in the table and custom folder and reload your skin.
