In 1994 after the merger of two of Inverness' Highland League Teams (Inverness Caledonian and Inverness Thistle), Caledonian Thistle were born. They joined the newly formed Scottish 3rd Division and within ten years, and the addition of Inverness in the name, they would become one of the most famous teams in Britain, after their 3-1 defeat of Celtic in the Scottish Cup 3rd round in 2000 and THAT Sun newspaper headline. Since then, the club's rise through the leagues culminated in the final day 3-1 victory over St. Johnstone at the Caledonian Stadium which won them the 04/05 First Division title. At that point, Super Caley were allowed promotion to the SPL, but had to play their home games at Pittodrie, home of Aberdeen, because SPL rules stated that clubs had to meet a minimum of 10000 capacity all seater stadiums. This rule was amended to 7000 seater however and after playing the first half of the season in Aberdeen, Caley returned to Inverness. Since then Caley have established themselves as a SPL side, known for their hard work ethic and never say die attitude. Many managers have been at the club through the years, and have all had great success at the club, unlike the "bigger" clubs they leave to manage.
