I've noticed since the patch that my back line players are getting skinned very often by opposing strikers, and missing a lot of tackles, resulting in clean breakaways.

Was this something altered in the patch, and what is the best way to correct it? Should I not have them on 'hard' tackling anymore?

Atleast they are tackling after the patch.

Hard tackling means they will go to every length to get a tackle in and they will attempt it even if it isn't the best of chances of success. That should make them tackle more but also miss more tackles.
