Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default wingers marking/closing down

I would like to hear if you have any suggestions on how to make wingers contribute more when defending.

My wingers tend to stay forward when the opposition push their fullbacks forward. I would like my winger to help out my own fullback some more. As it is now it seems like my opponent very often has both their winger and their fullback attacking while my winger just stays forward being of no use.
I have noticed that it happens even when I play with a winger with good defensive stats (Gareth Barry). I've tried playing a bit around with man marking the fullbacks and lowering mentality a bit. I still think that I really shouldn´t be necessary to put the mentality too low as it should be a natural thing to help out your team and not just watch football. Does it help to increase their closing down level?

Anyway do you have any suggestions and how is your own experience with your wingers/ side midfielders defensive contribution?

yosniel8 is on a distinguished road
Default

you could do this via the opposition instructions, have your wingers close down, and maybe even try show onto weaker foot on the full backs, i think this would help
