Attributes for Instructions - discussion and partial guide
This thread takes on the approach of assigning specific instructions based entirely on the attributes of your team and players.
Or to put it simply - what attributes should we be looking for to make the best use of certain instructions?
Mentality
For this, mentality will be split in to two extremes: Defensive and Attacking. We can adapt these attributes depending on exactly how defensive or attacking we wish to go.
Attacking
With an attacking mentality players will sit higher up the pitch and will look to attack when any oppertunity presents itself.
To make the most of an attacking mentality a player will need high attributes in Off the Ball, Pace and Stamina.
Defensive
With a defensive mentality players will be positioned deeper on the pitch and will wait for what they see as a good chance before attempting to play the ball forwards.
To make the most of a defensive mentality a player will need high attributes in Positioning, Strength and Concentration.
Creative Freedom
The most difficult and over-used of instructions. The default tactics suggest that a mixed creative freedom is a good thing - it's quite the opposite. Only truly exceptional players should be given high creative freedom while most average players should be limited.
To make the most of creative freedom a player will need a host of high attributes, namely Passing, First Touch, Technique, Creativity and Flair. Depending on the player's position, high ratings in Crossing, Dribbling and Off the Ball will also be benificial.
Passing
Again I will be using two extremes to discuss this instruction.
Short
Short passing can lead to players being put under a lot of pressure, and will look to pass to a close team mate in order to retain posession.
To make the most of short passing a player will need good First Touch, Strength, Composure and Passing.
Long
Long passing is the basic 'lump it up the pitch and see what happens' approach. Players will look to launch attacks from deep positions on the pitch.
To make the most of long passing a player will need good Creativity, Passing and Technique.
Tempo
The two extremes of Tempo are Slow and Quick.
Slow
The slower the tempo, the more time your team will take to look for good attacking and passing oppertunities.
To make the most of slow tempo a player will need good Concentration, Composure and Passing.
Quick
The quicker the tempo, the more urgency your team will show when looking to attack.
To make the most of quick tempo a player will need Creativity, Passing and Technique.
Width
The two extremes of Width are Narrow and Wide.
Narrow
When playing narrow there can be a lot of pressure applied to your team. There is likely to be congestion and players will need to think fast.
To make the most of narrow width a player will need good Concentration, Composure and Passing.
Wide
When playing wide the important part is finding space to receive passes. There will be quite some distance between your players and passing needs to be of the highest quality.
To make the most of wide width a player will need Creativity, Passing, Off the Ball and Crossing (for wide players)
Time Wasting
Time wasting can be very problematic because it invites a lot of pressure on to your team. Players will need a strong physical presence to deal with it.
To make the most of time wasting a player will need good Composure, Concentration, Positioning and Strength.
Defensive Line
The two extremes of defensive line are Deep and Push Up.
Deep
Your defenders will take up deep positions both with and without possession of the ball. The main threat to a deep defensive line is a big target man so a strong physical presence is essential.
To make the most of a deep defensive line a player will need good Jumping, Strength, Positioning, Composure and Bravery.
Push Up
Your defenders will look to keep a high line up the pitch in order to reduce the threat of big players. The main threat to a defensive line that pushes up the pitch is players with a lot of pace. Players will need to be both mentally and physically strong to deal with the pressure of a high defensive line.
To make the most of a defensive line that is told to push up the pitch a player will need good Teamwork, Positioning, Acceleration, Concentration and Pace.
Forward Runs
When a player is told to make forward runs he will drift up the pitch when the team is in possession of the ball.
To make the most of forward runs a player needs good Off the Ball, Pace and Acceleration.
Run with Ball
When a player is told to run with the ball he will drive onwards and attack the opposition with the ball at his feet.
To make the most of running with the ball a player needs good Off the Ball, Dribbling, First Touch, Technique, Pace, Acceleration and Flair.
Long Shots
A long shot is defined as a shot at goal from more than 20 yards away from goal.
To make the most of long shots a player should have good Long Shots, Technique, Creativity and Flair.
Through Balls
A through ball is definied as a pass into space for another player to run on to.
To make the most of through balls a players needs good Passing, Technique and Creativity.
Cross Ball
For the purposes of this, crossing will just be for the end product - getting into a good position to cross the ball is covered by 'Forward Runs' and 'Run with Ball'.
In order to put in a good quality cross a player will need good Off the Ball, Composure, Crossing and Technique.

One thing though with creative freedom it may be worth pointing out that increasing CF on the slider has the effect of increasing the influence of the "flair" attribute.

Attributes for Instructions - discussion and partial guide Post #8
This comes from another forum here and listed below are some of the questions that PaulC answered. Thought I'd add this to the thread where its very relevant
Mentality - Ultra Defensive/All Out attack
- When out of possession this slider affects the distance between defensive line and the rest of the team.
- Slight effect on player positions when in possession
- Affects likelihood of players making attacking rather than safety first decisions when on the ball.
Creative Freadom - Little/Much This is actually a slider to add on/subtract flair to a player.
Albeit subject to some effects of morale. Eg a low morale player may be less inclined to follow a flair boost.
Passing Style - Short/Long
The closer the slider towards "Long" the more "Wimbledon like" the style
Tempo
How quickly they try to move the ball around. Low tempo means players more likely to be patient and hold onto the ball looking for options.
Width - How far wide/narrow the players stand, or how often the pass to those locations, a mix of the two?
Purely the positions in which they line up.
Time Wasting Even at max will it only count in the last x mins of a game?
Yes, if the situation is inappropriate it will be ignored. The higher the setting the earlier they may start wasting time.
Defensive Line
The depth of the back 4 line.
Tackling Does it also refer to the likelihood of a player making a tackle and not just how strong the tackle is?
Hard/Easy tackling does indeed affect dirtiness
And finally:
The tickbox Use Playmaker - what if no playmaker is specified?
If none is defined it wont use one. Ditto target man.
