Sometime soon I'm going to be putting these in to practice with a Newcastle game.
I've already made some prepatory xml changes so that I don't have to keep fiddling with settings and I'm good to go as soon as I get some free time.
If anyone else would like to join me on this journey - maybe translating it to the lower leagues - then feel free to post your story in here.

Hmm not a bad idea actually do you wanna set up a new xml structure for players? If so I've already started with Cambridge..in another thread..I could just incorporate them into this thread..since there is key information up there.. but what kind of detail do you require? I will copy and paste from another thread....let me know if its enough.

Rep Power: 0 | Individual Instructions for Defenders
Assuming you are playing a back four formation and whether its attacking or not the instructions will hardly ever vary: Defender in a Defensive/Attacking formation
Average standard team, with a normal defensive line. Team is characterized with trying to hold possession when possible, and intelligent build up play Defensive/Control/Attacking Tactics
<LI> Standard Defender
Mentality: Defensive(5)
Creative Freedom: Low (5)
Passing: Short 6
TTB: None
FWR: None
Cross: None
Closing Down: Own Area (5)
Defenders who are expected to attack for counters, characteristic of good sides
<LI> Attacking Defender
Mentality: Defensive
Creative Freedom: None
Passing: Direct (first notch)
TTB: Normal
FWR: None
Cross : None
Closing Down: Own Area (5) Defenders in classic 3 man backline formations
<LI>Sweepers
Mentality: Defensive (last notch)
Creative Freedom: None
Passing: Direct (first notch)
TTB: None
FWR: None
Cross : None
Closing Down: Last notch of own area or possibly own half.
<LI>Stoppers
Mentality: Defensive (last notch)
Creative Freedom: None
Passing: Short - Mixed (last notch of short)
TTB: None
FWR: None
Cross : None
Closing Down: Slightly higher if you're using a sweeper behind them. Preferably in the own area region as well. Probably the last notch, since you want them to drop back and close down first.

I've decided to start with a 4132 formation due to Newcastle's abundance of good midfielders.

Well pre-season has started off quite well, with fitness levels starting to peak in time for my first match - a rather daunting away trip to the Reebok Stadium.
Friendly round-up:
vs Clermont Foot Auvergne 63 (A)
Newcastle were happy enough to allow Clermont the ball but didn't let French League 2 anywhere near the goal mouth. A completely one-sided match saw Newcastle run out comfortable 6-0 winners with Martins bagging 5 goals for himself.
vs FC Sète 34 (A)
The French lower league side managed a better show than their more lofty counterparts but were still easily burshed aside 2-0 by a Newcastle side lead by Geremi. The Newcastle captain bagged himself a goal and set another up.
vs Guingamp (A)
Newcastle showed their strength by caming back not once, but twice to salvage a 2-2 draw at Stade du Roudourou. Gunigamp's lethal strike force saw them score with two of their three shots at goal, but Troisi and Milner pegged them back both times.
vs FC Metz (A)
Newcastle's first real pre-season test came in the form of French League 1 team FC Metz. Faced with harder opposition Newcastle took control of the ball and built their attacks slowly. Goals from Martins and Geremi were enough to cancel out N'Diaye's early goal to end the match 2-1.
vs Blackpool (A)
Back on English soil Newcastle take on the Championship's Blackpool. With almost complete domination Martins helped Newcastle to a 2-0 win despite the worst example of finishing seen in a long time. Only 4 of Newcastle's 19 shots were on target.
vs Sheff Utd (A)
One of those bizarre games that saw Sheffiels Utd score in the 1st minute, and again deep in 90th minute injury time to cancel out Newcastle's 13th and 16th minute double salvo from Geremi and Emre. Sheff Utd score with their only 2 shots on target.

| I was noticing this last night with my midfielders, the ball was behind them and close but they wouldn't close down despite having a high CD setting. From memory I think their mentality is fairly high too. Is it best to combat circumstances like this to have a lower CD setting when using higher mentality?

If a player has an attacking mentality chances are he won't be doing a lot of closing down.

Forward Runs
When a player is told to make forward runs he will drift up the pitch when the team is in possession of the ball.
To make the most of forward runs a player needs good Off the Ball, Pace and Acceleration.
Run with Ball
When a player is told to run with the ball he will drive onwards and attack the opposition with the ball at his feet.
To make the most of running with the ball a player needs good Off the Ball, Dribbling, First Touch, Technique, Pace, Acceleration and Flair
Through Balls
A through ball is definied as a pass into space for another player to run on to.
To make the most of through balls a players needs good Passing, Technique and Creativity
--------------------------------
Sorry I don't mean to be rude, but I think a good decision is also needed even if set to often for FWR, RWB or TTB. To me Run with the ball doesn't require off the ball, instead I look for agility.
