The down side of tight-marking is that if your player is beaten to the ball a player with good first touch will leave them for dead. It can also cause you back line to be dragged wider creating more space though the middle.

This depends on your approach. Generally the DC's are your last line of defence and if their line is breached then chance are the player has a free shot on goal. I prefer my DC's to have low closing down to retain their shape and increase at lease one midfielders closing down to break up play.
However this isn't the only way to do it.
