It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Closing Down instructs your most appropiate player to close down the nominated opposition player when they receive the ball. You can use it to deny this player time on the ball and force them to make a decision on what to do quicker.

Tight Marking instructs your most appropiate player to tight mark the nominated opposition player when it is their responsiblilty to mark them. You can use this to deny this player space to move into to receive the ball.

What's the downside of tight marking? Should CBs not close down?

The down side of tight-marking is that if your player is beaten to the ball a player with good first touch will leave them for dead. It can also cause you back line to be dragged wider creating more space though the middle.

This depends on your approach. Generally the DC's are your last line of defence and if their line is breached then chance are the player has a free shot on goal. I prefer my DC's to have low closing down to retain their shape and increase at lease one midfielders closing down to break up play.

However this isn't the only way to do it.

so lets say you have a midfielder like gerrard or lampard...what would be the best instruvtion for them? close them down so they cant shoot or to mark tightly so they dont have space? with tight marking isnt it easier for the opponent to get away from his marker?

I use OI in response to how the opposition are playing. If a winger is causing me hassle with crosses I will get close him down using OI to try and give him less time to put in a good cross.

Have a look at who is causing you the most trouble or who is the supply line, try to cut this off and then they will have to change the system or be ineffective. Becautious at the higher levels as the better managers will have multiple player capable to focusing the ball to.
