Well, after much hand-wringing and consternation ... changing graphic files and changing them back, trying different color combinations, and dealing with a copy/pasted-multi-times typo, I've come to the conclusion that ...
radestock's right.
My menubar's colors are now set.
I realize from my first post, everyone has been talking about the tree, but I've been working on the menubar, which now has a background color of "ocol" and outlined white text. Really, I don't see too much of a color-issue with the tree, because, like Aurora was, the tree will just be "fcol" on "bkcl" like the titlebar.
The real trick for me will be getting the praphics to "flow" from titlebar to tree seemlessly, and getting all the widgets moved around to "better" places ...
Even if you have fcol on bkcl, there are still colours for 'mouse over' and 'selected' items on the tree. These can't be set to a team colour like 'fcol'. You'd need to pick a neutral colour or indeed use an outline or other method described above. Plus - whilst it can work on the titlebar, the sheer amount of text on the tree and the amount of times you look at it can make it look annoying as team colours (I'm thinking Barca, Palace etc).
Yeha, I know ... I remember how Aurora did it ... it's still on susie, but with no screenshot. There is a skin called Wraparound for '06 that does it as straight lines, rather than french curves like Aurora, but at least it has screenies.
And yes, there are certian teams I wouldn't want to manage with this kind of skin. Villa, Marseille, and Barca are just a few examples. My custom team is yellow on black with silver trim, and I once posted a FM06 screenie with Aurora which was commented on by someone as being the ugliest skin he's ever seen.
But I liked it, and if I can stop playing the game long enough, I might actually succeed in creating something like it eventually.
In the meantime, I'm quite happy with what I've got so far ...
