Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Realistically, how many formations should I be using per season?

The reason i ask is simply because when I stick to any one formation I tend to get owned 3 games down the line, no matter who the opposition are.

For example I've opted to try an easy-ish club (Juve). They have a good array of defenders and once I bought in a good DM, I had a strong a midfield. Oh, and the front line isn't too shabby either. The only real weakness is down the flanks, thus I decided to base most tactics around this i.e. 4-1-3-2, 3-2-3-2 or 4-2-3-1 et al (all get tweaked away from home).

Whilst all start promisingly, all tend to fall apart 3 games down the line even against the likes of Siena etc, no matter if the tactic has just destroyed a more than competent side away from home.

It seems each game I play requires a completely different tactic if I'm wanting to string more than 3 results together, something I don't have time to do, nor have the desire to do.

I suppose my question is, is this normal?

07 required mere tweaks and a second tactic away from home, but this version seems to require constant change if want to string 3 results together.

I was finding the same problem. I had to switch from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 every few games to maintain a decent run of results.

However I'm now in season 3 and am finding making fairly minor tweaks to the 4-4-2 depending on the opposition seems to be working ok now. I generally give my full backs, wide midfielders and 1 MC more freedom to go forward at home against weaker teams.
I may switch to 4-1-4-1 against the likes of Chelsea and Man Unt(I'm Portsmouth)

I have always used four formations in the last few versions of the game.

An attacking home tactic used against almost all teams at home if the pre game odds are in my favour

A more defensive, counter attacking formation used away all the time and at home against a top team

A narrow, slow, time wasting tactic used to defend a lead and run down the clock if leading

A rarely used ultra attacking tactic used when a team defends in depth

I toggle between them during games and rarely play the same tactic 2 games in a row which keeps the AI guessing.

Lately I have been using only one formation the 4132, i have a 3232 which i deploy when i have good players. I handle playing defensively or offensively by managing slider changes

I have just played my first season. I played only with one formation 4-4-2 diamond. My team is Swansea in English 2nd division.

Im not sure if Swansea is one of the easier teams in 2nd Division, but I had a pretty good season with no real spells.

See my thread for a potentially good tactic and instructions on how to implement it.
