Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Defending set pieces

Does set piece training effect your ability to defend set pieces? I have most of my defenders set piece training set to low and I've noticed that with 6 games gone of the season we seem to be conceeding a lot of goals from set pieces, particularly corners. My defenders are pretty good in the air and have decent concentration levels, so if it isn't training the only other fix I can think of is to tweak my set piece instructions. For information, they are roughly as follows (for corners):

4-3-3

FBs on both posts
CBs and my CF who is good in the air marking tall man
Wide strikers/AMF left forward
Holding MF set to close down short corners
Other two midfielders simply 'back'

Im Liverpool and I am dominating game after game and having all the chances they get one corner and i know before they take it they will score which all teams do..its ridiculous and iv egot two full backs on the posts, two centre backs man marking, one player closing down, the rest in the box and two up front.

I don't know how much influence the set piece training has although it is for the obvious reasons. You definitely need good headers defending the tall man and fairly decent marking skill for man marking. I tend to leave one forward and one midfielder in attack for linking breakaways. I look at one or both central defenders marking the tall players, one player closing down, both fullbacks on the posts, one to mark the small player and the rest man marking. It seems to work reasonably well.

I concede about 60% of goals from corners

By default, both of your DLs and DRs are marking the far and near post. You have to set them to man marking duties during corners. You have to give the post duty to another 2 of your players with decent heading and jumping.

Both of your CDs should be marking tall players, and your DLs and DRs to man mark. The rest just go back defending.

The poorer header of the ball should stay forward or you can assign one to close down the corner kick.

This applies to free kick defending. Always have 2 players guarding the far and near post.

Corners: True. Since many of the teams you meet will put strong headers on the posts (just like we do), you should always have people that can match them in the air. I used to get a lot of goals against me from corners, even if I used the same strategy getting people back. The way I solved it was to put everyone on man-marking(DC on mark tall, all others but one striker on man-marking). Worked out nicely for my *** Torquay team.

Free-kicks: No need for people on the posts - at least not for me. I solved the problem by having fewer people in the wall, four men man-marking, one going back. Suddenly Im almost never letting in goals from free-kicks.
The reason I dont want them on the posts are that if the free kick comes in from the sides, I have two men less to defend against players rushing into the box. And the fact that I hated having men at my posts when I was a goalie - they tend to be irrational in their way of defending, and makes it worse for me to do my job(e.g by going for the ball that I know Im gonna get.. Even if I shout loud and clear..) - but that just might be down to the standard of the team I used to play for

I have everyone man marking from corners and have the two weakest headers on the posts and leave 1 or both forwards forward.
Also look at a players jumping stat too. Better jumpers should mark the tall players.
