My players seem to get through from the edge of the penalty boxes, but tries shooting from those area when i've a player unmarked in the middle of the box.

Would be a tap in if he squares it to him instead of shooting all the time.

Is it down to tactic or player's attributes. If so, what sort of attributes should i look out for in the future.

think about mentality of the players, high mentality for wingers and midfielders will see them going for goal, if your striker is really the one with the attacking mentality then he will be the one going for goal.

So if my wingers' mentallity is set to defensive, it would not mean that they will not go forward, but instead it'll square balls instead of shooting?

I suggest you turn off the mentality slider for your AMs. Also, turn off creavtivy mentality, passing and closing down. Set it all to normal.

If your wingers like to run with the ball often, tries tricks, likes to beat man repeatedly, then set his run with the ball to rarely.
