ya .. most of the game , the CD only can get 7 , unless he can grabbed a goal from corners etc.. then will be 8 .
if conceded more than 1 .. should be below 7 , so the average rating wont be higher than 7 ...

It is not just the instructions of your CB's, but your whole defence, which matters.

In any case, set your CB's to:
Ultra Defensive
No Creative Freedom
Closing down "mixed"
No FWR's
No RWB's
No Long Shots
No TTB's
Marking - Man
Tight - No
Hold up ball - No

Those are usually the best settings for CB's. If they still do not work then either 1) your fullbacks instructions are wrong 2) you keep getting battered because your tactics aren't right or 3) they simply aren't good enough!

Note: Defenders can easily get an 8 without scoring

Would agree with Gandelf, but I instruct the centre halves to close down very rarely. Centre halves in real football don't snap into a challenge as it can easily expose the team in a dangerous area if the opponent goes past him. They usually just stand off and force the opponent to pass.

True. Personally i have one on rarely and the other on mixed, this ensures there is always one free to sweep up if the other gets beaten, (a sort of John Terry role).
