ok...ive started my very first season with nottingham forest and its proving quite difficult being consistant and im changing my tactics nearly every game to find something that works! lately 4-3-1-2 seems to be working. ive got campbell on loan from man utd and lookin to buy a few cheap players and also bring a few more in on loan. i have a transfer budget of £150k. Has anyone gone notts forest and had a successful season and could recommened some potential signings and/or tactics??
sell Smith for £500000, also sell lennon, breckin, dobie, agogo, possibly tyson as he's injury prone.
see if you can get david thompson for free. Depending on your database, see if you can get:
Seyfo Soley (free)
kalle Ljungberg (free)
Damon Gray, Hibs (50,000)
... but the best player I bought was Miroslav Slepicka from Sparta Prague for 480000. I'm in March 08 on my current game and he has scored 43 goals. he is amazing! If you can't get him, you could possibly try starting again and putting all the Czech players on, he will appear then. he is awesome for League one. I play him as a lone striker. he just gets the ball and runs at people.
Do not sell smith. Ive managed to get forest into the premier league and he's by far my best player. Get Craig James and Steve Marlet both free transfers.
Look at the freebies first and sign Chris James and and Malcolm Christie. James can play right wing or in midfield. Christie scored 20 goals for me alongside Tyson who scored 27. I usd 4-4-2 throughout.
To further bolster the attack continue with Campbell on loan and also go for Danny Haynes from Ipswich, both will score goals and at this point you haven't spent a penny of your budget.
For the midfield you already have strong players in Cohen, Clingan, Lennon (although he tires quite quickly), Davies, McGugan and Commons (who again never seems fully fit in my game). Once you add James to this you should have enough. Cohen playes well on the left or centre, Lennon, Clingan and McGugan can all play DMC and the latter 2 AMC, Davies is consistent on the right or left and can play upfront if needed and if you really want Perch can play midfield too (although I played him at right back and he was good).
At the back Bennett LB, Wilson, Morgan and Breckin CB, Perch and Chambers RB. I bought Andrei Cordos (80k I think) and he did well with Wilson at DC. You could loan one of the Liverpool reserves if you prefer. Also signed Cristea for the left side and he did well covering left back as well as left wing.
Smith in goal, get a loan signing to cover from one of the Premier League clubs.
Lose Dobie Holt and Agogo if you can.
That should be plenty to get out of league one. once you're in the Championship wait until the new season money comes in and then ask for more transfer funds. They just gave me £5M after giving me an original budget of zero.
thanks trent end tree, loads of useful information! i tried snapping the players mentioned by you and the others but have already gone to bristol - dam! think i'll need to bring in back-up players in my defence but saying that in 15 games ive scored 29 goals and 9 against, developing into quite a strong team. danny haynes and sturridge ive requested a loan for extra firepower. thanks for the comments
I bought Bogdan Stancu for about 150k and he pretty much single-handedly won me promotion, scoring 28 league goals.
Your key players are:
Paul Smith
Kevin Wilson
Wes Morgan
Kris Commons
Neil Lennon
Chris Cohen
Sammy Clingan
Nathan Tyson
Hold on to all of them if you can. Agree with the rest of the guys, that you should try to loan players from premiership teams to bolster areas within the squad. Look at some of the lower end teams though - players at Arsenal or Man Utd are unlikely to want to come to you, so i snapped up a few good youngsters from the likes of West Ham, Villa and reading!
Completed my first season last night. It was pretty impressive. I won the league by 14 points, got to the semi final of the FA cup (largely thanks to a favourable draw), and won the Jonnie paint cup.
My star striker, Slepicka, got 51 goals in all competitions. To be honest, this puts me off a bit, as he seemed to score a bit too frequently.
At first, the board offered me £650,000. I went to the budget adjustment and adjusted it to £2.7 million. I waited another week and asked the board for more funds and they gave me 6.7 million!!! So, here I am preseason, 2008-2009, and I need to buy some players in, preferably defensive. Anybody got any ideas?
