After some expeimenting with a few formations, trying to build a solid defence, I am finding some success with the 4-1-4-1. I finished 5th with Portsmouth(my first season there, but after 2 years at Rangers first), but struggled to find a striker who played consistantly well.
I tried the flair player in Vagner Love, he did ok,but would go long spells without scoring and I tried the use of a tall target man in Marco Bernacci(from Ascoli) 6'4 and 18 for jumping and heading, he won a lot of balls, but rarely scored, even from crosses/corners.
A also have an Atletico game runing, great defence so far,but I'm not sure whether to go with Forlan,an all round good striker, but with low compose so misses too often for a lone striker or Aguero who is fast, skillful and a good finisher, but will never win a header.
What kind of success have fellow forum users had with the lone striker tactic.
ps my 4 midfielders all have forward arrows to get forward and suppoet, my DM very rarely moves forward,he is there solely to help the defence.
My DR/L are on normal mentality and mixed forwad runs so generally push up as far as the final third to give my wide midfielders an escape when closed down by 2 players.
i'm having som sucsess with rangers playin a lone striker, i play a 4-3-2-1 with my full backs playing more like wing backs an my midfielder in the middle with a back arrow to sit in front of defence if needed an my 2 are aml/r playing through balls to either cousin or boyd who i play in rotation, sittin top of lg at start of january transfer window and 13 points clear of celtic( tactic is solid lokking in spl but a disaster in europe)
I think he needs to be a Totti/Eduardo type player, so intelligent enough to lead the line alone and also quite an all round player with no real weaknesses. I think it also requires a midfield which will get forward to support, one player in isolation is never going to have an impact. I had an Arsenal game set up like this:
Rosicky Fabregas
Hleb/Maxi Rodriguez/Matias Fernandez
Eduardo
So basically five supporting attacking midfielders with two other out and out goal scorers in Maxi and Matias. I couldn't stop scoring with this set up, even Hleb was banging in the goals. Then the demo ended and I started a new more conservative game.
I tend to play an AMC with forward runs set to often with a target man in a 4-4-1-1 formation. This is the only way I have had success with a lone striker as he can often pick up the pieces after AMC has run through. Although having Drogba helped...
First: don't pay attention to the comments recommending you players for that position. The beauty of FM is that it's not the names that play, but the players that you handle and try to squeeze most from them.
Lone striker is basically doomed to be a target man. He cannot score a lot, because he is surrounded with so many DFs, and his duty is to hold and redisribute the ball to the cavalry approaching from wings or midfield. For example, a player who 'plays with his back towards the goal' is a good example of such a player (besides the regular TM characteristics).
Of course, if you really have a skilled player, you can tick the 'run with ball' instead of 'hold the ball'. But I would avoid it, I use it only when I play with AMC.
My 4 midfielders all have forward arrows, and Forlan's instructions are to hold up the ball with rare run with ball, but he's not doing too well. His stats are ok for a target man,but I need a better one.
