It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Central Midfielders

So, my defence is pretty much sorted. I've tweaked it a little based on later advice in this thread and it's fine now. I'm just not quite sure how to approach the two central midfield spots. At the moment I'm playing these two together, with the third stepping in as needed. He's better than his rating suggests.:

Can I get away with using these all-rounders, or do you think I'd be better getting one defensive and one attack minded MC? I set both of them to the default individual settings for a central midfielder.

Your thoughts?

IMHO you cant just say well my defense is grand now without taking into consideration how the rest of your team is set up. Your defense could be great because of your midfield etc. You need to think of the team as a whole not individual defenders doing defending midfielders doing midfield things etc etc you need to make them all work as a good unit. you could have ultra defensive defenders and ultra attacking midfielders if you get me its not threading together you got a team of individual nothings and not a team, team. And believe me the AI will have a field day if it is not knitted together they will find the "holes" in your formation.

Serps:

Chris James looks to be the perfect central midfielder..I'd look at him to play in the Gerrard mould. He is by far one of the best in the championship. And he could play in the centre in a more defensive role.

The reason being that he has the qualities to challenge for the ball, win it and do something with the ball.

Unfortunately for you, Bryan Huges is good enough for L2 football imho and should be offloaded as soon as possible to quote your assman. I wouldn't even be fielding him. He's far too slow...if I were in a situation where I had no choice. I'd stick him in the centre...and hope to god he doesn't lose the ball.

Marney extremely good, can play in the centre and on the flanks. Since Marney is a good tackler of the ball, put him in the centre..go to the presets and select Defensive Midfielder for him.

Stick James on the flanks..he will be very dangerous

First choice pairing in midfield has to be James and Marney.

Damn you're playing a 442...with 2 central MCs..ok..very simple...go to presets choose defemnsive midfielder for Marney and attacking midfielder for James

Things were going along very nicely, though I was aware of a lack of depth in the side. A brought in a handful of new players as the Window opened in January and really expected to kick on. I'm not so stupid to just throw them in though, and only fielded a couple of the new players as subs. And it all fell apart, culminating in a 5-0 home defeat at Southampton.

So what's going wrong? Might the pitches be to blame?

Pitches don't give you extremes such as what you're experiencing. You seem to have difficulty in maintaining consistency. That suggests to me that you may want to look at your tactic very closely.

You may want to try going for 2 tactics here. One with a DM away from home that you can use against fast teams and teams that have good midfielders. And another more attacking tactic at home which could also be a 4132 or a 442. Seems to me you need consistency first.

At home you look ok. Away you seem to make yourself hard to beat. I think you just need a bit more consistency. You strung two good away wins after that defeat to Swansea.

There's simply no rhyme or reason to it. I know players go in and out of form, but the entire team have turned into no-hopers overnight. My wingers have stopped getting past people, my strikers couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo, and my defenders keep setting up the opposition. All regardless of morale, which I managed to boost by rotating them through the reserves.

I'm now going to bottom of the table sides, and they're favourites ffs.

I just want a formation that gets the results that reflects the quality in my side, not some killer tactic. Is that really too much to ask?

No tis not..the one I sent you works wonders for me...i have made two variations to it..one has a long farrowed MC and the MCs have been moved to ml and mr positions. But it does require a good DM.

Alternatively i think your players can use the 442..that should be ok.

I am finding the same thing really cant see any reason why my players are struggling so much, my wingers dont go past people at all and by strikers never see the ball!
