Ok, so after trying some of what spur80 helped me with and it not working I am gonna start again with liverpool (yeah easy choice) and build a tactic from scratch explaing my thoughts as I go, so feel free if you disagree with anything I say or I have got things completely wrong please chip in.
First of all my GK, I really havent a clue how to set up the GK apart from using the default GK settings, so thats what I will do. The only change I will make is that he will distribute to defender so he doesnt lump it up fields and give away possession. And I will give it to Riise as I feel he can disribute better than anyone in my back line.

Now the defense, I am going for a flat back 4 all set to the same mentallity (6) and the same with my DM, my full backs are going to have forward runs set to rarely as I want my defensive unit to opperate as just that (a unit) and one of my big problems is that I am conceding to many goals.
My full backs will have closing down on 12 as I dont want the opposition wingers to be able to cross the ball. And my centerbacks will have closing down on 5 as I dont want them getting pulled at of position and I hope this will force the opposition strikers into shooting from long range. My DM will have closing down on 12 as well trying to force the opposition into a mistake and losing the ball.
Something I have done in the past is play my DM as a play maker (I dont tick the use playermaker option just list him as a playmaker) as he seems to have alot of space and be able to pick out some good pass, my DM needs to be a great passer as he will see lots of the ball hopefully.

If you have noticed I havent mentioned passing at all, this is because I am going to employ the same passing style throughout the team. I am going for a short passing slow tempo game as to try and reduce the amount of goals I concede. So far under the team instructions I have only moved passing to short (5) tempo to slow (5) and defensive line to normal (8).
I am also not goint to play with creative freedom as I dont really want to limit the amount of options any of my defense have of playing the ball out.
For the rest of my team (wingers, central midfield and attackers) I am going to leave the closing down in the middle as I do want them to close down in their own half but not so much that they get pulled of position.

Now onto attack gonna try and keep this as simple as possible, I am playing wingers so I am going to focus passing down both flanks. Both wingers will be set to 13 mentallity as will my CM. Wingers will as you expect have forward runs and run with the ball set to often and to cross from the byline, and cross's often, long shots and through balls normal. CM will have through balls and forward runs set to often also with a slightly higher creative freedom.
I am never quite sure how to set up a striker so again gonna keep it simple, I have a target man (same as my playmaker not selecting Use Target Man just putting him on the Target man list) who will have through balls set to often and can hold up the ball, and a striker with forward runs set to often, both strikers have 15 mentallity.
Hopefully I can get some results now if not I will tinker. By the end of it I hope to use my full backs in attack and increase the forward runs to often but until I can keep a clean sheet I will stay like this.

First set of results in for my pre-season friendlies nothing to amazing but I am happy with them.
Crewe away won 2-0 with 55% Possession and 15 shots 7 on target and 8 off.
Aberdeen away drew 1-1 with 56% Possession and 18 Shots 7 on and 11 off, the goal they scored was a shot from the edge of the box.
Monaco away won 1-0 58% Possession 14 Shots 3 on and 11 off.
Wrexham away won 3-0 56% Possession 19 Shots 9 on and 10 off.
Siena away won 2-1 49% Possession 12 Shots 2 on 10 off.
Really pleased with the amount of passing thats going through my DM and CM, DM averaging about 70 Passes per game

Right I am still conceding, the danger usually coming from the flanks, how do I prevent this?

barnzy you have problems with the positioning of your players i.e individual mentality relative to the Defensive Line and closing down is a bit wild too for some players i would say.
Example your defensive line in the link is one click below normal so its a DL of 9. This is about halfway between your 18 yard box and the halfway line. Now your def midfielders mentality is one click below the DL i.e 8 ok that's alrite but you have his closing down at 15, he is not going to hold that defensive position relative to your defensive line he is going to be going beyond the halfway line a tad too close down if he can. Do you see the Gap there that will create?
DL is where you tell your players to start to defend not where your defenders will line up. Try picking a Defensive line and lining up your player's mentalities and closing down relative to that. E.g Defensive line 12 set you central midfielder to 12 mentality and 12 closing down, now depending on whether he is the closest man to the defensive line when the opposition get the ball there i.e 12 on the pitch (a little over halfway between your 18 yard box and half way line) he will go close down exactly there and start to defend. set forward players a little higher just make sure there close to the midfielders mentality and closing down, not too far apart. likewise in descending order do the same for the rest of your team e.g that defensive midfielder can be 10 and 10 close down and individual mentality respectively. Thats two clicks or closing down below the Central midfielder, see they will close down in an orderly fashion.
these numbers are just for examples, good rule of thumb is DL of 14 tells whoever is closest to the DL of 14 to close down the opposition player the second he moves into your half, 14 being the last of the own half notches on the slider, of course make sure individy mentality and close down are 14 too if you want the player to do this. Closing down is also dependent on player stats too.
hope this helps a bit.
