Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Defending - A seemingly impossible task

Ok, I think i'm nearly there with a tactic that I can be happy with but....

Consistently now i'm having upwards of 3-4 times as many shots on goal and shots on target as my opponents, and i score a reasonable amount of goals. The problem is the AI seems to always maange to score from hardly any chances. I've listed a few typical examples below...Both winning and losing ones for balance

Home (I'm Leeds) Vs Middlesbrough

Leeds Shots 19 On Target 10 Pass 78% Goals 1
Boro Shots 5 On Target 3 Pass 70% Goals 3

Home Vs Southend

Leeds Shots 25 On Target 16 Pass 74% Goals 5
S'end Shots 3 On Target 2 Pass 66% Goals 3 OG)

Away Vs Wolves

Leeds Shots 14 On Target 7 Pass 73% Goals 1
Wolves Shots 6 On Target 2 Pass 71% Goals 2

Any many others that follow the same pattern.

I've read and followed the instructions for defending by rashidi. I'm happy to read them again, but can someone please post the link.

Alternatively is anyone willing to enter a discussion and offer practical advice on how to implement a solid defence.

I'm currently employing the following settings.

Man Marking
Sliding scale of closing down (as per other threads)
Defensive Line - Normal

Would be grateful for advice....Thanks

I have a similar problem with leeds, I have tried 2 defensive mids and back five but I leak goal like crazy. Thank gd for haynes or I wouldn't be in the playoffs. Its something to do with pace the defenders are nowhere quick enough.

Sounds sensible, having said that though it must still be possible to defend with average pace (My two CD's are 14 & 11).

Maybe i'm doing something wrong with the defensive line and closing down, but i'm sure i shouldn't have to compromise my whole team strategy to accomodate the AI having a totally unrealistic shots to goal ratio...
