Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Defending the dreaded 4-2-4

Could anyone give me ideas on how to defend this tactic when the AI switches to it in the last 10 mins, i've lost count of the times i've conceeded late equalizers to the AI. At present i take FR and RWB completly of my full backs so it's 4 v 4 at the back then i go narrow, more defensive counter attack ticked and quick direct passing but it doesn't seem to do much good they still get their eqalizer 9 out 10 times.

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S Also does anyone now what team instructions roughly the AI would use in their 4-2-4 because if i'm ever chasing a game i barely get a sniff, whilst the AI switches to a 4-2-4 and completly destroys me. I think it would be handy for when i'm chasing a game.

When the AI switches to this you need to drop any forward runs or running with the ball on your fullbacks. Set the two central defenders to man marking and your two fullbacks to mark the FL and FR. If the AI goes to 4-1-5 then drop a midfielder back or bring on a defender to mark the 5th player. Also watch for a midfielder with a forward arrow as he will try and sneak in whilst your four defenders are busy - deal with him with a defensive midfielder set to mark the AMC. You should find if you do this that you may even sneak a goal whilst the opposition are pushing forward. Finally make sure that counterattack is ticked - good luck!!!

Forgot to mention after rereading your post that you need to slow right down on tempo and passing and go down both flanks - this makes it harder for the opposition to get the ball and should make your play more accurate.

Very very loosely speaking I'd imagine the all-out 4-2-4 basically consists of all team sliders being pushed all the way to the right (creative freedom and time wasting aside). Therefore logic would dictate the best way to counter it would be to pull these sliders all the way to the left..

When faced with a 424..the weakest positions are the flanks. Now if you have 2 defenders doing nonspecific man marking you should be ok. The most important thing I do for this is to reduce my mentality to normal and my width to normal..that makes sure my fullbacks who are normally attacking stay closer to the dline

another thing i do is always always slow down tempo

I always had team changing to 4-2-4 and scoring, so I thought I'd play them at their own game and it worked.
I know this sounds really simple compared with the other answers on this thread, but If you change your formation to 4-2-4 and match the oppositions arrows and it seems to work. I'm not saying it's 100% guaranteed solution but it's stop teams scoring against me when they switch to 4-2-4. I don't change any of the instructions or sliders I just let them get on with it.
