Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Relationship between closing down and mentality

Ideally, if my closing down is set to 14 for my Right/Left midfielder, he should close down once the opposition steps over the half way line (my Defensive line is 14).

But that doesnt happen. He normally wait and wait until either the opposition is past him, or my fullback is closing down, bypassing my Right/Left midfielder totally.

Im assuming i must have done something wrong with his individual mentality.

So i wondering, what is the relationship between closing down and mentality. Should they be +/- 1 of each other, or is it fine to have CD at 14, and mentality at 20 (for example).

See Faeron's thread - it will explain far better than I can but essentially your midfielder needs to be closing down higher than your defensive line.

I have been following his thread.

Quote:
Mentality is set individually throughout the team. Striker-10, winger-9, midfielders-8, defensive midfielder-7, fullbacks-6, defenders-5, goalkeeper-4.

Closing down is set individually to tailor the DL setting. The striker is allowed to CD outside the teams defending shape. He is given CD-20. Whilst the rest of the team is set to close down within the teams defending shape. Midfielders-14, wingers-13, defensive midfielder-12, fullbacks-11, defenders-10 and goalkeeper-9. This is just an example the settings might need to differ slightly more to get the desireed effect.
That is what he said. He then posted his tactics which i tried, totally different from that, so im trying to tweak to suit my game.

I have found that his instructions work a treat no matter what tactic I use and are a good starting point.

Also, any idea why is it that the opposition is able to play the ball behind my backline so easily. Players merely crossing from close to my half, right pass through the back four.

xfer - is there any chance you could upload a screen grab of some instructions you are using?

Sure, here we go. Maybe an advice or two how i can tweak this further.

Im trying to get the players to close down once the opposition hits my own half. Getting my team to defend better as a whole. Short passing football while attacking. Playing with 2 play makers in my MCs. Not sure if i should have focus passing checked as "through the middle".

xfer, correct me if I am wrong but are you running the game without the patch. The beta patch available in the forum gives better closing down options (own area, own half and all over the pitch). I would also think of slowing the tempo slightly to give you more possession and more accurate play - good luck

Yes, im running without the patch. I heard the full patch will be out? And the current one is only beta?

I will have to restart my game if i patch it right?

I'll try out the tempo =)

In my opinion, it's not exactly "closing down" that is the issue, more "positional awareness" of players closing down if that makes sense.
