I started a new game with my beloved Leeds Utd and decided to take a new approach (for me anyway), and tweak my tactic depending on which team I am playing.
I'm sure many of you have tried this and it would be interesting to see your thoughts. I have been looking at my next opponents results and looking at the stats/formations that were used for any games they lost - especially if they were heavy defeats. For example, I was up against Millwall who were on a 3match winning streak and in good form. I noticed they had a 4-0 defeat at home by Crewe. I clicked to look at what formation Crewe played at it was a 3-4-3 formation with the central striker as a targetman to head. (I could tell this as looking at Crewes stats, their central striker has about 15 headers and won 13.
So, I used the default tactics and chose a 3-4-3. I set basic instructions such as mentality, forward runs etc depending on what players I had. I basically didn't want to make it too attacking as I was away from home, so I wanted a nice solid tactic. I was a bit worried about just playing 3 at the back.
I then selected 'use targetman' with supply to head - and played Steve Marlet there, I told the fullbacks to 'cross to targetman' etc.
So, I played the game and I came away with a 3-0 win (away from home)! Marlet got man of the match and scored two goals.
This is just one example but I am having some success with this - especially against the weaker teams who have actually had a few bad results.
I guess my point is that may seem obvious (although I never did this), is look at your opponents results, see who defeated them and try and work out how they played judging by that teams 'player stats'
Did they use a target man?
Did they pass through the middle
Did they play short passing (MC have a high & of completed passes)
Did they use a playmaker?
If it seems obvious as to what tactics were employed, then chose a default tactic mimic theirs and tweak a little to the style you think they may have played.
It's easy to get wrong I know but after about 10 games of this and looking at my own player stats after a game, I am getting used to how a team plays from looking at their player stats after a match - there is a lot of useful info to be read from this.
Sorry if this is obvious, I'm sure many have tried this before.
Please feel free to add your thoughts.

Certainly wasn't obvious to me (although now you've pointed it out I realise that it probably should have been ).
A very good idea this, sounds like a very good method of approaching the game.
I'd be very interested to know how it works out for you and more about how you approach the various teams you play, i.e what you manage to read from looking at various results, how you incorperate that into your tactic for that game, and what results you end up with.
Keep us posted

I think I will start a new game with a Prem team and log my progress on here (if no one minds), that way I can put down exactly what changes I make and why, along with screen shots. It would be good if others who like this approach to the game also add their thoughts input.
The reason I am reluctant to carry on with Leeds is because of the stadium bug.

This might be an idiotic question but I've gotten very lazy as FM08 is easier for me.
How do you identify the play maker? or if there passing through the middle?
I know this could be seen as vague, but I look at there last few games and see if they have been using a target man as this is easy to spot.
I then look at their formation and see what players they have in MC position. It's usually one DMC and one AMC (although not always).
I then look at the players creativity and ask myself "could this guy play as a targetman?"
So from this and the stats such as how many passes he makes,I get an idea if I think the AI has used a playmaker. I can usually tell after 10mins in the game if they are using a playmaker.
I they are passing through the middle, I look at passes the MC have made and the passes the wingers have made and come to a logical conclusion, by looking at the player attributes If they have fast wingers with good crossing - I can assume they are using 'Down the flanks'.
Like I said, these are based on my own assumptions and by doing this thread and with other peoples help, I hope to understand further.
I am now looking at tactics not so much as 'how do I want my team to play' as in trying to predict how the opponents are going to play against me and how can I counter this by looking at how other teams have had success against them.
Besides, I need a challenge as I am bored on an evening so this gives me something to do besides play FIFA08! (The g/f is away for 1 week!)

bRAzIL how do you see the tactic that the team used in this team or you see the actual tactic?
By looking at their results, clicking on a game (say they lost 2-1) click on here and go to formations and look at team stats. I Annalise these and try and determine how they play and how they can be countered i.e. How did the team who won them 2-1 play? Where were their successes?
