Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default I'm giving it one last shot...

...after my rather downhearted last post here i have decided to have one final pop at this game.

My dream with this has always to play attractive football, my last save file was my all out attept to do exactly that, i somewhat cheated in the search for perfection (was more of an experiment than anything else) and many would say i achieved it in terms of personnel brought in (we're talking a first team at times containing Ronaldinho, Messi, Fabregas, Silva, C Ronaldo, Gerrard, Torres, Villa, Alves etc...). However what i achieved perhaps disheartened me more than any other thing about this game. They sucked, i mean sure they were winning the odd game i was set up for a very attacking flowing game of football, however even with these fantastic players the short ball game required narrow play (else i was left with my defensive mid holding the ball because no one was within a yard of him to pass it to) however narrow play restricted space (and thus any kind of cohesion). I tryed everything i could think of from dropping back farrows, sarrows, barrows, free role for ronnie, free roles for everyone, lots of freedom, not much freedom, and all the settings in between. Yet nothing came even close to playing how i wanted my billion pount team to play. The closest i would get would be one passage of play or a one-two which might result in a goal and only teased me as to the possibilities of my team, so here i am....

Guys i need your help, if i don't make it work this time i'm hanging up my sheepskin, i NEED an exciting team to manage, i NEED to create a tactic which works for them (and me) and unfortunatly it looks like i NEED all the help i can get, i'm sure it's not just me, this will no doubt me useful to other people too.

I have read many of the articles relating to tactics on this site and and am slightly in two minds as what to go for, what i'm really after is an arsenal style of football. I will likely be playing as Liverpool (as always) and would also appriciate your advice on certain problem teams (i.e Chelsea, i find they are a rock at the back which also manages to cane my defence at all times, go figure) and the rest of the big teams which will play more attacking against me.

I would be very greatful if you guys can get back to me

Try this, if you are playing against a 442 try using opposition instructions on the two MC's and the two Strikers?.

If they are fast?, NEVER tight mark, but close down always, hard tackle and show onto weaker foot if they have one.

If they are slow?, ALWAYS tight mark.

Against a 41221, use opposition instructions on the DMC, two wingers and the lone Striker and base your instructions on the above.

Give it a go and see what you think?.

I don't quite understand why you would close down fast strikers always. Closedown results in your defenders losing defensive positions and there is a high chance that the fast striker will dribble past your defender as he attempts to close down.

You could look at it that way, but from what i've witnessed of the match engine in its current state, if you do NOT close him down, he will basically just keep walking through your defence?, in fact, a lot of the time he will do that anyway?.

When people are having these problems my usual suggestion is this. Go for the standard options that the game provides. Pick any formation, preferrably one with at least 1 defensive midfielder, and use the preset instructions in the tactics list. Use that as your starting point and tweak from their...

Played 11 won 11 scored 29 conceded 3

Strange thing is that the match engine dosent seem to show your players carrying out opposition intructions ie they dont always tight mark or always close but as soon as I tried this the opposition started playing like my team and missing sitter after sitter
