Default Difference between Forward and striker

I have a question that I have wanted to ask for a long time and I hope an official SI employee can help me with this one. So here goes:
What is the real difference between a striker and a forward?

A striker will normally only play through the middle in a central role. A forward can also play in one of the wide forward positions if you play 4-3-3.

Van Nistelrooy would be a striker, Henry would be a forward.

Are you sure? Because I play a system with one attacker upfornt and I have noticed that a forward plays better there than a striker.
SI please clarify!!

Yes I am sure- a forward can play comfortably in any of the front roles, including the ST position, so can easily play as well as a ST in the ST role.

my understanding was that a forward was more likely to drop back and link up play (ie, rooney) whilst a striker is there for goals (ie, owen)?
