Let's put it this way the 4231 is definitely a formation worth looking at. It has potential, depending on how you set it up, which is why I was suggesting if people would want to set it up by offering information..there are several variations of this formation...the narrow one, the one with 2 MCs playing as DMs, another one with 3 narrow AMs and one more which has AM's playing as an attacking strikeforce..which is what I'm developing now.
The challenge of any 4231 is not the attacking end, its in defense and midfield. Getting goals is not the problem, keeping a clean sheet is. So far my experimental formations have yielded 60% possession, but one thing I've observed is that its very well possible to make a solid 4231; interestingly enough hasn't anyone noticed that there isn't a default 4231 formation?

BTW yeah it is a 4-2-3-1, and its the formation that I have had huge success with, as when on the ball it becomes a 4-3-3

Where did Miles comment on the 4-2-3-1 formation? Can someone please link to the thread.
I usually find the AMC plays too close to the striker so I don't bother with this formation very much in the past.
I'd also like to see that, if anybody is kind enough to dig it out. </BLOCKQUOTE>

If woolfc is still around, could he possibly give some more details on the way he sets his team up - team mentality, passing style, tempo - those sort of things!

Your formation isn't how Barcelona nor Chelsea play. They play a 4-1-2-3 or 4-3-3. They don't have 3 attacking midfielders. There's normally one defensive midfielder in the team e.g. Makelele or Toure. 2 central midfielders who have exquisite first touch and passing e.g. Xavi & Iniesta or Lampard & Essien.
According to the Dutch this formation is one of the best formations because everyone's role is quite clearly defined and there are many triangles to start of with, so, a team with good passing and stamina benefit from this. With 4-4-2 formations the players have to move with a lot of communication, e.g. the 2 strikers. One has stay up like a target man while the other has to move to the channels or deep, hence why you normally see one big striker and a small pacey striker being paired. Like Tottenham. To me, I think there's alot of confusion with a 4-4-2 that's why I never play it. Although, if the movement is very good because of the communication, then I could easily be one of the best formations.
