Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default How do you defend in the midfield and down the wings?

I'm Ajax and it's an unpatched 2008.

I've tried a 4-1-2-3 (like the Barcelona and Ajax formation) but converted to a 4-1-2-1-2 . Reason for doing so is because Huntelaar wants to move on to bigger clubs so he sits in the reserves and no one that I can find will fit in the striker position who will come deep to collect the ball and move forward to get headers. Furthermore I feel that this 4-1-2-1-2 crams the midfield and makes it harder for the opposition to break through whereas with the 4-1-2-3 the two wingers do not close down. Or am I using the wrong tactics?

This is my first team setup:

------Mitea------Luque-------
------------Dehli------------
------Maduro------Gabri------
------------Heitinga---------
-Urby---Stam--Vermaelen-Ogararu

Mitea and Luque and sarrows. I used to play this same formation and almost the same tactics back in FM2007 with Real Madrid and was very successful. But it just seems not to work here.

When I watch the whole match, my fullbacks (Urby & Ogararu) don't close down properly. Like for example, they stay very far away from they opposition winger. And when the winger dribbles closer to my fullback, my fullback decides he should close him down, but he leaves the position he once was empty and there, lays another opposition player which they opposition team pass to him and he bombards down the byline.

I set my central midfielders to tight marking and man mark because I noticed that without this options turned on my midfielders give tons of space to the opposition to move about. On the team mentality I play mentality 12, 12 on the defensive line, 5 on passing, 8 on tempo and play the offside trap. What I wanted to achieve with these settings was to pressure hard and fast in the midfield area so the opposition has no time to play a nice long ball over the top of my relatively slow defense (Stam & Vermaelen). But it seems that it's either the fullback problem or the midfield problem.

It's very disappointing to see Ajax play so badly. Please help.

another example of closing down bug... hard tackle seems to avoid that a bit.
