Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default a question on mechanics

I'm one of many having a spot of trouble enjoying the new version of the game. -Don't get me wrong: I love football manager and has played every iteration since way back when and I'm not about to write it off at all.

But with this version I have trouble understanding the tactics-engine and as a result too many strange things happen to my team (the worst was being up 4-0 at half-time and going on to loose 5-4). I have looked through the forums a bit and have one question that maybe could improve my understanding of the game:

Does the tactics engine function a bit like rock, paper, scissors?

-I know its more complex, sliders and all, but it seems to me that certain tactics can be "beaten" by certain other tactics, so that if the computer figures out your general style of play, it is able to quickly alter its own tactics and lick you good. While not completely unrealistic, is not completely realistic either.

I hope what I'm asking is somewhat clear, the game really has me confused this time round.

Let me clarify on my last point: if, in real life, every tactic could be simply countered by other tactics then there would be no such things as playing style. While (probably) all teams tweak their approach according to the opposition few teams completely overhaul their tactics from game to game.

For example my favourite team (you wouldn't know them, I'm Danish) play a pressing game, trying to win the ball high up on the pitch and attack while the opposition is out of position. Now a pressing game can be "broken" by the opposition reverting to long kicks up to their fowards the moment they get the ball. While this is a countermeasure of sorts, it is certainly not without its costs since the team kicking long tends not to hold onto the ball as well (unless their forwards are really good) and thus are put under pressure due to having very little possesion.
Good teams tend not to do this against us; instead they move the ball around quickly in order to beat our pressing. This is often knife-edge stuff if the opposing team is of comparable quality to my team.

The point is: these tactics don't really "beat" each other in a rock, paper, scissors way and it seems to me that this is what happens in the game (though I'm still not sure about this, thus the question).
