Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Football Manager 08 - A Tactical Revoloution! (LLM)

Tactic - Tac Build v.1

Intro -

So, I took on a challenge in the Challenges/Sign Ups thread, where you go into the editor, and add into the Blue Square South /(North) a team that you have fully created. After the initial excitement of creating my own team*, the reality of managing a Blue Square South team kicked in. I started the game with 15 players, all aged 16, of which none were worthy of a first team place. Throughout the first season, I switched between a number of tactics, none of which were any use, due to the sheer inconsistency of them. Now half way through my second season, still in the Blue Square South, and I hit a very bad spell. 14 Games without a win in all competitions, which saw me slip from a promising 5th in the league, to a depressing 14th. In that time, I also got knocked out of the FA Trophy, FA Cup AND the Setanta Shield to teams that aren't even in a playable league. Needless to say, I was disgusted, and considering dropping the challenge. But that would be the easy way out. So, for two hours I sat down and developed a tactic for my players. Not a tactic that i thought may work, or that has worked in previous saves, but i literally built every position around the player that would go there. And boy did it work. Since the inception of the tactic, the last 11 games have seen 9 Wins, 1 Draw and 1 Loss, Scoring 28 Goals and conceding only 6. 3 of which came in the only loss with the tactic. (2-3), Giving me 8 Clean sheets. As you can imagine, I impressed. More than that. I was shocked to my very core that it worked, since, i've never been a tactical guru, and got most of my ideas from this very forum.

*The team is in no way a 'super team'. No edited players have been put into the game, and the team does not have a wealth of finances, training ground or youth facilities. Its a very basic 5,000 (500 Seated) Stadium, with none of the amenities, realistic to a Blue Square South /(North) Club.

So, why am I telling you.? We all know that a tactic may work wonders for one person, and be dismal for another, but i'd like for you guys to try my tactic, and see how it works out for you.

I will post all individual screens, tactical overview, and if you wish, attributes for the players in the posistions.

The Idea behind the tactic

So, i was losing games, and conceeding goals. Not what you want. The tactics was built around a defensive formation, with counter attacks, and a 'long ball' games.

As you will see from the following screenies. The tactics are fully built around the players.

Player Positions

Team Instructions

Forward Runs

Player Tackles

Passing Style

Run With Ball

Tight Marking

Try's Through Balls

Mentality

Marking

Try Long Shots

Hold Up Ball

Free Role

Cross From

Cross Ball

Cross Aim

Creative Freedom

Close Down

10 Games Before Tactic Change

Win - 1
Loss - 5
Draw - 4
GS - 16
GC - 20

10 Games After Tactic Change

Win - 8
Loss - 1
Draw - 1
GS - 28
GC - 6

As you can see, the team is MUCH more prolific.!
Since i've built the base of the tactic around the players involved, and provided every screenie possible, i dont see the point of uploading the tactic, since you would have to change all the Individual Intructions to suit your team.

Its just v.1 at the moment, and a few tweaks will hopefully make this tactic great.!

*Note : Just because it works for me, it doesnt mean it will work for everyone.! Please dont hold me responsible if you fail with this tactic.

Feedback is very welcome, any questions, advice or anything else... just holla.!

Great tactic for weaker teams. Results wasn't so spectacular, but i played this season without any transfers.

Questions:
- Did you choose player instructions based on players skills? (It looks like you are )
- FC - should he be more like Target Men (finishing crosses) or like Fast Striker (everything else )

And sry for my poor english skills

One more thing (why can't I edit previous post ) - how many goals did you score after corners with this "6 Yard Box" setting? I played with old good "Near Post" and I've scored 5 goals in 30 matches.

Q1 - Yes. Each player was limited in his skills, so i had to maximise what he COULD do for the team, this has worked will with the results.

Q2 - So long as he has good finishing, technique, work rate etc it doesnt matter how he is percieved. My two strikers are very disimilar in Height and Weight, but have equal goals in games. The stats they both have do not represent a fast striker, nor a target man, however, i would lean toward a fast striker, due to the counter attack.

Q3 - Before i edited corner instructions, I rarely scored from corners, now, i score form about 2 corners every 3 games, however i have edited the 'Attacking Corner Options' to reflect my players too. [I.E - 2 Men Attack From Deep, 1 Marks Keeper, 1 OFfers short option, etc] And i seem to have found a great balance.

Hi NepentheZ, for my Juventus (Italy) I am looking for something different than the annoying 442 and a goals leaking 433 so I will try your 451 tactic "as is" in the first place just to see how it'll perform in my 2nd season starting from Italian Super Cup against Milan on Aug 17 2008.

I'll post in a while the detalis of the game so you'll know something more about using it with a world class team.
(sorry for my poor English, I am Italian )

See Ya!

This really is interesting stuff, especially because I see you´re having great success with a direct style and counter-attacking, at a low tempo, which is supposed to go against everything previously believed. It certainly goes against what the manual says. Anyway, good work on finding a tactic that works and keep us posted how it develops...

OK, well done!
Not too bad...actually good looking
Juventus - Milan 2-0 (after extra time)
Cavani scored in the 1st extra time (94') and 2nd extra time (111') then I switched to high time wasting for the very last 9 minutes.
My team (Juventus) played alot on the right side (almost doubled the left side) so I'll see what can be done.
I played with:

Buffon

Zaccardo Andrade Criscito Chiellini

Luci

Camoranesi Nocerino de Guzman Giovinco
(90' Almiron) (63' Tiago)

Trezeguet
(63' Cavani)

Ball Poss.: Juventus 52% Milan 48%
Shots on goal: Juventus 19 (11 in & 8 out) Milan 23 (12 in & 11 out)
Pass. %: Juventus 78% Milan 73%
9 corner kicks for both
3 offsides for both

Zaccardo, Camoranesi, and Nocerino (right side) down to about 60% fitness after the game and a huge amout of passing (high % btw) but it needs a good fix 'cause I'll play every 3 days almost through the whole season and I need them in good shape (90-100% if possible in busy periods).
OK, I'll give it a try for the upcoming season and I will post once I am done with it because they need to apply this new tactic after a tweak that needs to be done regarding the above described issue. Meanwhile I made happy my supporters by beating a rival club such the CL winners
Thanks for now and I'll get back sometime soon

If you put your tactic up on a download site then you'll get much more people testing it rather than having to copy all of your instructions by hand. That way you'll probably also get it tested with teams at different levels in different leagues too. Well done on creating a tactic that seems to keep clean sheets and scores a few goals. For me so far on FM2008 I can either keep clean sheets, or a can score goals, haven't managed to put the two together yet though!
