Cleon, must we wait until the full patch before you continue this thread? Is the beta not good enough?
I have always tried to get your tactics and ideas to work and have always failed to have as much success. I am determined to get it right this time.
Looking forward to hearing the rest of this thread.

Well i have just won the Championship (on Goal Difference) with Sheffield United without any transfers in and only one loan (Charlie Adams - Rangers - 3 Months)
Reading Cleon's tip's really helped! Billy Sharp finished with 35 league goals and Beattie with 11 which wasn't that bad considering he'd been out most of the season!
Thanks Cleon! Really started looking at tactics now!

Cleon, just wondering if you had any PKMs you'd like to share from your Sheffield project? I always like to see replays of other peoples games and see what can be learned from them.

Alright, Cleon, I have read this entire thread and I have a few questions that I hope you can give me some insight on. Great stuff, btw. Look forward to the further game by game details.
First off, I am playing Hartlepool in Cola 1, so LLM is in full effect. I finished 8th in 2007, so not too bad, but I am struggling with some issues and not scoring (1.4/game) as much as I think I should be based on Shot/On Goal (usually over 10/over 5).
Generally, I play a 442 w/ short farrows on the wings, short farrow on the MCa and barrow on the MCd. All 4 of my mids are set to normal mentality and are the only ones on the main slider b/c it makes it so much easier to change your focus with the main slider this way. CBs and FBs are defensive w/ FBs having FWD often. Strikers and TM/fast and offensive. Passing is mostly mixed, tempo slow/normal, width narrow, CD high for wingers but low for both MCs, CF low except MCa, fast striker. C/A ticked, TM unticked.
1. I have had a really hard time playing a "come at me suckers" direct passing/quick tempo/counter attack game. Even when I use two quick strikers with 15 pace, it is not very effective. The opposition just eat up possession and eventually find a hole and score. Instead, my success has been with a slower tempo/mixed passing/narrow formation. Isn't this counter to what you should be able to do in LLM?
2. I cannot get my TM to work well. He rarely heads the ball on or, frankly, anywhere helpful. But he seems ideal. Big dude, determined, Heading 17, First Touch 15, all other important stats are good enough. I have him set to...
Mentality - defensive/mixed
CF - low
Passing - short
CD - often
FWD - mix
RWB - rare
TTB - mix
Cross - rare from deep
Sadly, one of my other strikers using these same setting but with ball on the deck seems to play better. What am I missing?
3. Wingers - They are both good and fast, but I have noticed that both had Decisions lower than 10 and it seems that if I leave them on mixed Crossing...well...they cannot decide what to do! With low decisions on players of that importance, would you take them out of their hands and set to often? Also, I figured that setting RWB to often too would make them either cross (from deep) or take off instead of just stand there pondering. Thoughts?
4. In 07, almost every report from a scout said they like to "draw the opposition in b/f attempting a counter." Now, I see a lot less of that and more of just that they play a 442 and "like to get the ball down and play it." Are you seeing this too and how are you handling it? Seems like direct passing, so maybe opt for short passing. Maybe this is why my tactic is working better with short/mixed passing and slower tempo?
I know you are busy, but I hope you have a moment to respond. Thanks for the great threads. Always fun to read and helpful.

Hi Cleon, good to see you again
Have your views on global/team mentality changed for fm08, i know you played with player mentalitys and also ajusted global mentality ingame.
I still personaly dont adjust team mentality if ive set all my players up with indavidual mentalitys.
Good post so far, get busy with the ingame action tho!!! |
