wwfan, your theories make a lot of sense and have helped me a lot. However you seem to concentrate a lot on playing with/against 442.
At some point (if you have some spare time) I'd love to hear your thought on countering other formations. In Spain and Italy variety of formations are used and thus it's tricky to work out how aggressive/defensive the opposition is playing and what approach is needed to counter it.

Sign up to the FM Britain forums, theres some quality tacticians over there (you may recognise some of the names from around these parts) that play with over formations thetruegooner
I guess it depends on the team, assuming your arsenal, i'd consider counter. Or Possession if you prefer not to counter attack

Nice topic, very helpful
I have a query tho, I get confused when I come up against non 442 formation as to what to use, for example I came up against a 4231 with 3 amc's with the two wide ones having arrows out to the wing and the two centre mids with arrows back to the dmc's, what would I play?
Also in Spain and Italy where I also like to manage they play different formations, how do I work out what to use when its non 442?
Thanks

| If your favourites use possession away but at home use control. You will notice they will never change formation.

For the guys asking about non-442 formation. This is the way I have worked it out and works for me: (bear in mind I am always favourites for every game)
HOME
vs any formation with arrows = ATTACK
vs any formation with NO arrows = CONTROL
AWAY
vs any formation with arrows = POSSESSION
vs any formation with NO arrows = CONTROL
Thats what I start with but depending on what is happening in the game I do follow wwfans advice on changing tactics if I have too.

Hi all i dont usually post on here but, i read wwwfan post and thought it made sense to have a set of tactics saved, so i downlaoded your tactics.
now i notice looking at some of the tactics they go against things i heard about before i.e having 4 players in free roles, having 6 of my team holding the ball when previous its suggested to have no more then 1 or 2 players do this, etc etc.
Is it ok to have the team tactics the same as yours but tweak the players tactics more to suit my players???
Another point after downloading your tactics, i now have an error message saying...
a serious error was encountered and the application will close, an error file has been generated in pc (set of numbers)etc etc...
runtime error
program:...am files/sports interactive/fm manager 2007/fm.exe
r6025
- pure virtual function call.
sorry for the long post but whats going on???

| I'm not sure why that would happen. it shouldn't be anything to do with the tactics. I assume you have unzipped them and put them in the right folder?
And yes, of course you can change them. My downloadable tactics were an example of the systems as suits my current crop of players, nothing more (e.g. I have extremely good wingers and a fast defence, so my d-lines may be slightly higher than the norm and the wingers are first choice for free roles/high CF). You should change the instructions to better suit your team.

Nice thread...incidentally, this game is a mathematical representation of what football could be like. And you shouldn't have to change the way you approach the game cos I play it like one large math equation myself.
Pity I can't contribute as much as before, but work is piling up.
