It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

If you set your DL to 14(own half) and gives none of your players any higher CD than 14, your whole team will only CD within the defending shape of your team designated by the DL. This makes your team compact and you will leave very little space for your opponents to exploit. The drawback is that if you loose possession far up the pitch whilst attcking. None of your players will CD early on, giving the opponents lots of time to prepare a pass wich might pose a danger.

Giving one/some of your players orders to CD higher than own half/the set DL, will be useful under such cirumstances. As when they close down the player with the ball the rest of the team can settle into the teams defending shape. This is one of the few reasons why players should CD outside the teams defending shape.

Example:

In a 4141 formation I want my team to stay put and restrict defending and CD to my own half. I set the DL to 14(last notch of own half).

Mentality is set individually throughout the team. Striker-10, winger-9, midfielders-8, defensive midfielder-7, fullbacks-6, defenders-5, goalkeeper-4.

Closing down is set individually to tailor the DL setting. The striker is allowed to CD outside the teams defending shape. He is given CD-20. Whilst the rest of the team is set to close down within the teams defending shape. Midfielders-14, wingers-13, defensive midfielder-12, fullbacks-11, defenders-10 and goalkeeper-9. This is just an example the settings might need to differ slightly more to get the desireed effect.

This settings will lead to players closing down in the correct order. I will elaborate further later on, I am currently at work. First impressions are looking very good when taking this approach to making tactics.
But in your tactics they are nothing like that, the closing down is much higher than the D line.
Why is this and can you explain.

The main thing different from the "theory" in the tactics is the closing down. It is set higher.

This is mainly because I am playing with a world-class side and want to dominate the matches. Also I made one tactic according to the "theory". This I use when playing against equal/better teams away/on neutral grounds.

When I play with a lesser team I adjust the CD like in the theory. When I play with a norwegian team and were to close down as high as in the uploaded tactics, I would be teared apart in most matches in european competitions. I also have a different set of tactics that I use with lesser teams.

Sorry for not being able to answer all questions lately.

What is important to know, is that you should have a few different variations of you tactic.

The different versions of the tactic should be made to suit different match scenarios.

One version to use when you are playing at home, where most opponents will hold back and not be too offensive against you. This will lead to your team play mostly against an opponent who has established their defence when you are attacking.

This will mean they will most/all players behind the ball. They will try to deny you space and stay compact. You need a little different approach in matches like this, compared to a match where you play away against an equal/better team than yourself.

In a match scenario like this, you should play with less risk. Instead you should try to counter your opponents when the opportunity arises. Fast attacks when they are out of balance is the way to go.

Also thinking like this is useful during a match, when you are leading with 1-0/2-0 there is no need to play with a lot of risk. Atleast not from my point of view. Try to make a few tactics to suit the different scenarios that occurs before and during a match.

Whilst just one version of your tactic will let you take out 70% of your teams potential. This approach might let you take out 100% of your teams potential.

I don`t want this to be all about advertising tactics and download of it. But these three tactics I am using when playing with a lesser team. They are made accordingly to the "theories" in this thread.

They are by no means wondertactics but could be useful when you are a poorer team.

Defensive version

Normal version

Offensive version

I think some of you guys think way too much about this CD and DL stuff. If one knows the basics of the real game then is really easy to set it up on this simulation game.

In my current game I play regular 4-3-3 (4 D, DM, 2MC, AML, AMR, FC) with no arrows. In the Team Instructions I only change width, DL, Time wasting and Focus passing. My DL is normally on 12 but sometimes changes to 15-16. CD is set on 12-13 for the team but differs indivdually as follows:
DC's = 8
DRL = 12
DM = 16
MC's = 8
AMRL = 15
FC = 20

What happens is when the opposition trys to attack through the middle my DM steps up and steals the ball to start the CA with nice through ball to AMR/L. If they try to attack on the wings my DR or DL closes them down with the help of the closest MC. Together they steal the ball and play it again to the closest winger to start the CA.
I'm very happy how balanced my tactic is right now. The opponent is not sure what to play against me. If they sit back, I keep possession and my wingers have a field day against their defenders. Thats how games usually start (I'm with Barca 3rd season) I score a goal or two and they start to attack me. But then thanks to couple of cood CA's I score two more goals. Games usually end 3-0, 4-0 or 5-0.....
I can't be bothered to post screenies or tactics for download, but I'll be happy to e-mail it to someone to do it for me. Anybody interested? I'm not trying to brag (after all I'm with Barca), I just wanna share some ideas :cool:
