The area of the pitch you set your teams DL, is the area of the pitch where the team will try to win the ball back.
So when setting higher Closing Down than the DL, your players will close down the player with the ball to interrupt him. They do not necessarily need to win the ball back.
When closing down inside your set DL players closing down will try to win the ball back. How often they goes for the ball will also be determined by tackling instructions.
This is how it seems from my point of view. I look at the DL setting as where on the pitch your team will defend from.
Is there by any chance anyone reading this that could help me put up screenshots/pictures? This would make it a lot easier to explain.
thank you so so much for this thread, you have no idea how much more fun you have made this game for me. my tactics work lol think dat something so small as getting the defensive line and close down to suit your style of play.

I am happy that you found it useful. I plan to go into more detail in the near future. There are lots of others things discovered/to discover.

If I may add to this good discussion..whether a player chooses to close down also depends a great deal on his attributes. The most impt of which being, determination, workrate and bravery.
Closing down is principally the act of reducin passing options or movement options for any player with the ball.
rashidi1: I totally agree with you. Closing down is also dependant of players mentality/attributes. One question for you. How do I put up pictures, without linking them. I want them to be shown at once. Sorry for the lame question. But I don`t know how to to it.
daleuk7: Global mentality will make your team extremely compact. How high do you want to set your DL? By theory if you set you DL to well above normal and also have above normal global mentality, you will be sitting high with your defenders. Offcourse this makes you more exposed to through balls behind your defenders.
Fast defenders will be an advantage when playing like this. Tactically it is a good setting for employing the offside trap, if your players could handle it. Also a goalkeeper with rushing out stats, anticipation speed etc could cover some of this space satisfactorily.
If you play with high DL and Global mentality I believe that high CD is crucial.

So you go there, host the image.
Copy the link to the image.
In the reply box the 2nd to last icon above the typing section allows you to display an image.
Click on that and paste the link from image shack.
Haven't done it in a while so I can't remember whether or not to click align etc. Just try the different options until you get it right
Forgot to add when you are uploading to imageshack tick the resize image bar and select for message board.
daleuk7: To answer your question more precisely I would generally set the global mentality at/just around the DL setting. I never play with global mentality so this is just theory.
This way you should position your players in a position where they do not have to move out of the defending shape of your team. If they move to far out of the defending shape of your position they will leave spaces within your defending shape.
Generally speaking consider the mentality of your midfielders/attackers when setting the DL. As they should be in position to start defending.
