I had a similar problem with spurs and kept giving away stupid goals, i decided to pack out the midfield and work from there so i used a 4-5-1 formation that becomes a kind of 4-3-3 with possesion so can turn attacking quickly, it worked excellently so i'd suggest you use that and see how it goes.

For the back 4 i'd use:
LB - Bale
CB - King
CB - Dawson/Kaboul
RB - Chimbonda
Midfield:
LCM - slightly attacking so i'd put Boateng here
CM - the most attack minded midfielder here so maybe Dica (you'll get a lot of assists and few goals here)
RCM - this is the defensive midfielder so i'd play Huddlestone here (he's better than Zokora)
AML - Aaritalo (he's perfect here and will provide a lot of goals and assists)
AMR - Lennon (he scored 18 last season playing here and set up 12)
ST - Bent (the man is a goal machine and scored 40 with 10 assists from 45 games last season for me). Altho I'm sure huntalaar would be awesome here too but i didnt get him.
I sold Defoe and Jenas early on as they weren't needed and also Berbatov got unhappy but Bent scored more so he had to go.
Keane is a good back up for the AMR position, and the rest of the players you have will be good to cover the rest but i'd suggest giving it a go as it worked great for me and really turned the team around to finish 2nd.
Let me know how you get on and if you have any questions about it.
