Finaly - a tactic that actualy works! (For me that is :-)
Hello everyone, this is my first tactic yet, so please be gentle!
After buying FM08 I found that the game was really really hard for me. I've played all the rest from 05 to 08 and this was the hardest. I downloaded the patch but I ended up searching here for tactics to use and when they didn’t work I decided to make my own. And result! It works! (Well for me at least ;-)
So I guess this is a tactic to use if you are really struggling and can't get results. The key is to tweak the settings very little to suit your teams play.
I also have to warn that this is probably a lower-league managers tactic as I have only tested this on my team (Ecjia - Spanish Second division B4) But if you test this and find it works for the likes of Man Utd too - let me know!
______________________________________________
Tactic: LU
Formation: 4-1-2-1-2
Strengths: If you have two pretty good strikers watch the goals fly in!
Weaknesses: You will need a fast, experienced defence when playing the better teams otherwise you will concede a few goals.
Key man: DM - If you have a defensive midfielder with high creativity you will be playing some pretty football!
What to tweak for my team: As I said this has only been tested out on lower league teams so I ask kindly to test this tactic out if you want to (play at least 3 games minimum). But generally follow these rules:
My strikers can't score in front of an open goal:
Try drawing a farrow (Fowards arrow) from the AMC to in-between your two strikers to give them support in the box (Against easier teams) or try setting your AMC as the target man, and then reduce LONG SHOTS (in player options in the tactic screen) to RARELY for both the strikers. This should help them to stop wasting a good opportunity and to actually hit the back of the net rather than into the crowd behind.
My goalkeeper has butterfingers:
The good thing about this tactic is that you don’t need an amazing keeper. But hey, if his handling is near non-existent then try drawing a barrow (backwards arrow) from one of your DC to your penalty area to hack those balls of the line when you need too.
My defence are about as fast as my gran:
Probably one of the main problems you can find when using this tactic against the harder teams is that the opposing strikers seem to get a ball from the half way line and outrun the defence all the way to the penalty area and score. But there is a solution. Firstly you need to go to team instructions, and then drag DEFENSIVE LINE from PUSH UP down to DEEP. But not too deep, drag it to the bit just before where it changes from DEEP to NORMAL. Then head over to OPPOSITION INSTRUCTIONS and for each opposing player from AM to ST (usually about 2-4 players) set their CLOSING DOWN to ALWAYS and their TIGHT MARKING to ALWAYS. I find this works great because your defence rarely get beaten to the ball, and just when you think the striker is going to take a shot and put you one goal behind, your defender who was marking him all along tackles (phew!) passes the ball to your DM (nice) he runs up and passes to a winger (this looks good) he crosses it in to a striker (hold your breath...) and with a bit of luck you score a great goal from a nice counter attack!
My wingers are passing the ball as if blindfolded:
When you see early on in the match that you keep losing the ball in midfield-attacking midfield because you either can’t seem to pass the ball around well or your keep getting tackled then you are probably suffering from a slow uncreative winger. I suggest buying a good player, but if like me your board are in debt and can’t offer you any money and the highest wage available is about fifty quid, I suggest trying to make your AMC your TARGET MAN and increasing your winger playing speed slightly in player options. This should get the ball quickly from the poor passing wingers to the (hopefully) slightly better AMC so that the wingers don’t pass to ball to anyone (the worst scenario a poor pass backwards to a defender which gets picked up by the opposing striker and... well you know) but rather to someone who can create something.
Every single corner for the opposing side is a goal, and yet I can’t score from one:
To be honest, I haven’t cracked this one just yet. Sometimes I can score rarely from a corner and they seem to do it with ease. I’m working to fix that, but for now if anyone has any idea – please let me know!
That should be it really! Please remember not to think “Hmmm, I actually have all of the above (bad goalkeeper, crap strikers, poor defence etc, let me chance all the settings...” because that will change the whole tactic and probably fail. Try to prioritise and then change only the most important or obvious and the best way is to SCOUT OPPOSING OPOSITION and tweak to what the assistant says. So for instance he says “...they have fast attackers so we should watch out” then I would do what is said under “my defence are about as fast as my gran” and so forth.
Please test this tactic out (give it at least 3 matches) and let me know what you think or what I can improve on! Hope this helps you out.
BTW I really like your approach and threads like this really help understand the game.
I believe that conceding from corners all the time is a bug that will be fixed in the full patch. I just had my keeper kicking off the 2nd half which meant a shot from halfway going in and me losing the game 1-0

Im not having any trouble from corners, but I tend to keep my two fastest men forward at all times, so I can quickly strike bkac. I recon that will keep some of their defenders at home, and therefore not heading the ball in.
Otherwise thix tactic is fine in league 2. At hoem at least.
Still working out how to make it more tight away
