End of January Transfer Window - Season 2008/09 - Derby County FC
Hey sports fans, Derby are currently sitting pretty in the top two of the
English Premier League, 4 points behind leaders Chelsea. This is down to the solid defence, with strong Brazillian defender
Felipe at the heart.
Board confidence has sunk over the month of January - largely due to the massive amount of money spent on bringing in new faces. Leading with the £30m capture of FC Porto's star defender
Vincent Kompany. Also, fans seem to be a little displeased with the signing of
Vagner Love from FC Nurnberg, for the pricely sum of £22.5m, despite only being at the club for one month.
Derby have made two more high profile signings during the transfer window:
Scott Brown of SPL side Celtic for £8.5m
and
Thiago Motta of La Liga side At. Madrid for £875k.
These transfers were made possible due to the sale of one of Derby's key midfield players,
David Jones, who joined La Liga's Barcelona for a whopping £33m, a figure the chairmen could not turn down. There was also the welcomed transfer of wantaway striker
Robert Earnshaw, who joined SPL side Rangers for a rather large fee of £9m.
Derby's progress in competitions has been mixed, whilst sitting pretty in the top two, they were knocked out of the Carling Cup in the 4th round by table toppers Chelsea. In Europe however, fortunes improved, whilst sitting bottom of their group, Derby needed to overcome Porto in a must win game to qualify, whilst hoping the group winners, Lyon, overcame Spartak Moscow away. In what was a thrilling match, Derby overcame Porto 3-2 away, whilst Lyon beat Spartak 2-1 away. Thus continuing the fairytale season for all associated with Derby. The draw was made for the 1st knockout phase, Derby must overcome the mighty FC Bayern!
Their progress in the FA Cup is still to decide, with a replay against Arsenal looming after a bore nil-nil draw.
This season so far has seen the departure of Ass. Man. David Kelly, whom joined Swansea as their new manager. In came Jon Andoni Goikoetxea.
Other facts so far this season:
Leading scorer: Kenny Miller - 24
Leading assists: Andrey Arshavin - 8
Captain: Andrey Arshavin replaces Andy Todd following some unprofessional behaviour.
Vice Captain: Andrea Consigli following the departure of Jones.
The upgrades to Pride Park have completed, increasing the capacity to 45,000, and a new state of the art youth facility + academy. The clubs fortune currently sitting at approx £31m.
The Rams have a long and hard second half of the season to go. Will they conquer Europe in their first try? Will they catch Chelsea to win the title? Can they replicate Man Utd's famous treble of 99? Time will only tell.
